About The Hoops

We are a folk/rock/psychedelic band from the Isle of Wight. It all started off one afternoon when Zoë and Mike wanted to play some songs, so they dug up some other people to come be in a band with them. Our music comes ringing out from the darker inner depths of Brighstone, where we practice in a derelict bat infested church. The locals all said they liked it, and so we did a bit of recording to brighten the hearts of every body that hears it. We are now known as the Hoops.

Zoë fronts the band, she plays a massive twelve string that takes up all the space. Also a bit of recorder.

Mike brings a psychedelic influence into the band, being from Niton. He likes to keep it reel to reel.

Doug is actually a pirate (he likes rum) who plays piano and doubles up on Melodica.

Joe is our bass player, he has a cardboard double bass

We put on gigs known as 'Tea with The Hoops' at town halls round the island, where we showcase great bands and have lots of tea for extremly reasonable prices! If your band is interested in playing or you want to know more about it then feel free to get in touch.

Pete Turner of the IOW folk scene on our gig at the FatCat Beer Festival... "...With Smoke & Mirrors finished Irish Dancers appeared and they kicked high on the dance floor. Then it was the turn of The Hoops. Booked to play as the first band at this years Isle of Wight Folk and Blues Festival in September this young band showed as do many young Island bands a real maturity in their music. If you check out their Myspace site you can hear for yourself the fusion of The Byrds, Woody Guthrie, Sandy Denny, Pink Floyd and the Beatles. It’s all there. I loved I Will Buy You A Ticket it has the innocence of The Magic Numbers and Lily Allen running through it, and a wonderful interpretation of the Woody Guthrie penned Way Over Yonder. The last number they performed before being bought back for an encore was pure psychedelic folk. The Hoops could have a great future if they are prepared to jump through them to get there."

Paul Armfield will be opening the night, which is absolutely brilliant. One of my favourite songwirters, kindly stepping in to make this a very promising night of great music.
