The Hoovers sound is an amalgam of surf and spy guitar instrumentals, sixties soul and garage rock ‘n’ roll.
With influences ranging from The Sonics through to The Seeds, from Love to Alex Chilton ... as well as their own rich and diverse musical experiences ... The Hoovers have a wealth of history to ensure there will be something to please all discerning music listeners.
A typical evening with The Hoovers saw you entertained by their original guitar garage/pop compositions as well as revved up cover versions of some of the grooviest sounds to emanate from a sixties turntable.
Craig Weighell, former ‘John Boy’ the singing drummer of eighties Perth legends The Waltons, as well as guitar maestro for Perth popsters The Daturas and many other bands in his decade plus of performing original music in Perth, takes the lead guitar responsibilities and shares the vocal limelight and harmonies with Justin Davies, the big bad mad-dancing former leader of The Purple Pit Swingers who also shares the guitar experience.
Henry Willoughby, a musical chameleon with over ten years experience in Perth original bands, feels equally at home behind the drum kit as he does slinging a guitar or bass over his shoulders - all of which he mastered during his long life as a founding member of the seminal Perth ghoul band The Feends. Henry has returned to his first love of caressing and beating the skins and ensuring that the rhythm is solid so the punters can dance. Michael Bolger completes The Hoovers line up, fresh from As Is and now casually avoiding the limelight behind his vintage bass guitar, content with ensuring that tight, danceable tunes are always the order of the day ... or night!
The Hoovers played many shows with other local original bands including Dumb Angels, The Early Hours and The Tune Bureau and were the first act for the 1996 Artrage opening party. They also arranged their own ‘The Congo Club’ evenings, staged in the red-velvety surrounds of Subiaco’s The Regal Theatre.
Addendum
The Hoovers only existed from 1995 to 1997, as work moved Henry to New York (Martin Moon from The Marigolds sat in on drums for a gig or two) and Michael moved east.
During this time the band helped establish a new (if also short-lived) venue, our "The Congo Club" events staged in the upstairs bar of the red-velvety surrounds of Subiaco’s art deco Regal Theatre lead to the location developing as a venue. We had done this primarily due to the dearth of venues for original bands (or any bands not playing top 40 songs) to play in Perth and the fact that other acts and dj's went on to use the Regal venue suggested we weren't the only ones who felt that way.
The Hoovers only entered the recording studio once, with Laurie Sinagra behind the controls, and independently released a very limited number of copies of the five track E.P. Suck!.
There are also a small number of live tracks recorded on mixing desks and at rehearsals which have been included for your listening pleasure.
