The Horrible Flowers's Blurbs |
About me:
"Eric Tretbar is to indie-rockers as Kurosawa is to samarai...like [Lester] Bangs in ALMOST FAMOUS, a penetrating observer of those drawn to rock'n'roll's incandescent wick." (Peter Ritter, The City Pages, 29.June.05)
JUST IN FROM FILMTHREAT! -- "Bettina is a memorable and harrowing creation, and Cline plays the role with a force of personality that would easily oil up the Oscar-talk machine had this been a studio production. She brilliantly conveys the mixed emotions of someone who won’t stop in the chase for big league stardom, but who nonetheless realizes the ridiculousness of her life...It is an utterly compelling and powerful piece of acting."--Phil Hall, FILMTHREAT.COM (3 stars)
THE HORRIBLE FLOWERS (feature film--2006, 83 min, color--dramatic comedy, written and directed by Eric Tretbar) A garage-rock Orpheus story starring Emily Cline (IN THE COMPANY OF MEN), Scott M. Foster, and Rena Owen (ONCE WERE WARRIORS, STAR WARS).
STORY SYNOPSIS: The female leader of a threadbare garage band nearly destroys herself on the eve of her success when she returns to the family she left behind. Also starring music, bands and landmarks of the Minneapolis music scene, including FIRST AVE CLUB (of Purple Rain fame), THE TRIPLE ROCK SOCIAL CLUB (current scene hang-out), and the antics of Minneapolis natives Matt Cronk and Paul Christensen (of the LA band, QUI). The 4th feature film by writer/director, Eric Tretbar.
"The Horrible Flowers...is proof positive that Tretbar, long touted as 'someone to watch' has now very firmly arrived. This is a fine piece of work for it's writing, direction, photography and for some utterly captivating performances, not least, from Emily Cline in the role of Bettina. There is a corking soundtrack which drives the narrative forward, interspersed with incidental music from Tretbar's own fretboard which evokes Neil Young's score for Jarmusch's 'Dead Man'." (Paul Blezard, Oneword Radio UK, June 2006)
This film is dedicated to anyone who's ever been in a band, ditched a drummer, hooked up, broken down, finally made it, or almost died trying...To everyone who's helped with the film so far--thanks for your support
