November 5th 8pm Johnny and the Boomers: First Thursday every month.
Johnny and the Boomers is a collaborative effort of five working stiffs that grew up in Northern Illinois under the influence of Chicago Blues. This influence expresses itself through the band’s dynamic live performances. They play a wide range of music from traditional blues ballads like Little School Girl to the hard driving Whammer Jammer. Their original music proves that they are an emerging force to be reckoned with in the Illinois blues scene.
In the early 90’s when other kids were listening to Pearl Jam, Johnny was listening to his dad's collection of old blues records. John's tremendous vocal talent is the backbone to the Boomers unique sound. Johnny's father is a talented lead singer with an unrivaled ability to sing with grit and soul. Johnny carries on this legacy with his powerful vocal performance and his screaming Fender "Strat".
The Boomers are a collection of musicians with long "rap sheets" of bands and performance. Lead by Teddy's mastery of the "lick'n stick" AKA the harmonica, he provides a rock steady springboard for band's blues sound. Ted bends his way through the blues playing through his collection of antique amplifiers that compliment his wailing phrasing. Ken’s guitar playing style is as varied and beautiful as his guitar collection. His talents help provide the harmonic backdrop that the band's songs are painted upon. The bass lines laid down by Phil provide the non-stop punch that drives their music home. Slow ballads come to life with his silky smooth fretless bass work. He is equally adept at providing screaming fast licks that punctuate the band’s signature hard driving style. Growing up on the Chicago south side provided Jimmy with an unequalled platform to base his musical style upon. The big man behind the drums also provides vocals for the band.
UPCOMING SHOWS
The Honorable Outlaws became a band in early Febuary 09' with a chance encounter on New Years Eve of two old friends; Guitar/harmonica player/songwriter Jay vonBruchhaeuser, and guitarist Kelly Collinson. It wasn't long after that the two were pickin' and grinnin'. A couple months later piano player extrordinare JP "James Paul" Scols joined the duo, tipping their folky, old-timey sound over the edges of tradition. Not long after that, the trio was joined by Kelly's longtime friend and collaberator, multi-instrumentalist Neil "Smokey Beans" Kulupka, who would become the bands "Full-time Part-Time" mandolin player. Given the fact that he lives in the St. Louis area and is only able to make certain shows, we never know which shows he's going to show up for, it usually ends up being a surprise for us, as well as the fans. When he is there, you will find that the band becomes whole, and takes on a completely different sound than what you would normally hear. Together, these musicians collectively known as The Honorable Outlaws will consistantly bring you their brand of progressive folk music, always pushing the limits of their acoustic intruments. Those coming to an Honorable show should expect nothing less than a good ole time, who love nothing more then to Pick n' Grin for people who wanna see something different.
Danny Powell is a rising abstract artist who is known for his artistic expressions that draw from his deep roots in philosophy, psychology, world history, and symbolism. Powell believes that "Art cannot be taught, it is something that exposes itself to those that are willing and able to encounter and embrace it...that art is about commitment and not formal training."
Powell's work is intuitive, fiery and expressive, involving bold and unusual color combinations. His paintings integrate flowing water based mediums, like india ink and acrylic paint, with dry mediums, like charcoal and pastel, the combination of which solicits a wide range of emotional responses from the viewer.
Powell's art presents a distinctive visual reality that blends different styles such as Fauvism, Art Nouveau, Surrealism, and Abstract Expressionism with elements of Classic POP and Arte Povera. The work is painterly, organic, and features bright color, with all-over spaced compostitions. One example of this synthesis is a work titled "The Dangerous Limit" created in the summer of 2001. He usually paints at night, when the energy feels right under artificial light or with candles. The work is meant to be experienced on a subconscious, visceral level, and connect the viewer to possible buried emotions. It is not literal and does not attempt to appear rational. Powell's painting is alive and pulsating, mysterious, paralleling his perception of life.
