The Hubble Constant has its origins in the coming together of its principle members in 2003. Having come from diverse musical backgrounds Charlie Butler, Tom Haworth, Bruce Goodenough and Ben Washbrook started playing together through their shared love of musical and scientific experimentation. Butler (Mothertrucker, Fat Pigeon and others) being a mainstay of the Birmingham metal scene for years brought strong rhythmic power, a keen ear for a riff as well as his pagent for the experimental extremes of the genre. Goodenough (Nanook, L=Cyde, Shoguns Decapitator) spearheaded many musical outfits in his native Stourbridge, and still produces and plays session in the area. Goodenough has a pragmatic sense of sound sculpture and is the pivotal player in bringing together the ideas of the individual members of the band. Washbrook (Distophia, Machine Called Z), having playing with Birmingham's indie/post-rock band DIstophia, was keen to work in a more creatively free environments where new ways of writing could be explored without restrictions of genre. Haworth (Kenschair) comes from a long folk music tradition, classically trained on the violin he excelled exhibiting a phenomenal ear for pitch and natural sight-reading abilities. However he turned his back and joined the local ska/punk movement which was strong in the late 1990s and which his sister is still a leading part of today with her band Skankt. Coming to Birmingham to study physics his horizons were broadened and his sense of precision and intricate craftsmanship is a keystone of The Hubble Constant's rhythmic character and Alex Dean with his passion for poetry added a different feel to the heavy music by utilizing spoken word instead of more conventional methods. In 2007 the band went through many changes. At the start of 2007, Nathan Coyle who was ever present on the Black Country DIY music scene with death metal band Panzer Attack and hardcore outfit Raise The Flag, was brought into the fold, wanting to spread his wings in more experimental areas and a chance meeting with would be band member Goodenough at a mutual friend's he was asked to join the group bringing a more aggressive vocal style pushing the sound to a more hardcore feel and cementing their position in the mathcore genre they are now commonly referred to. 2007 also brought one more addition and a member leaving; Dean left the band and in late 2007 The Hubble Constant completed the line-up as it is now by adding local avant-garde noise manipulator and Mothertrucker bassist Tom Moffat on samples producing live noise and drone. 13/8/2008 ANOTHER UPDATE! Yes, I know we seem right lazy bastards by the lack of shows and what not.......the fact is, we are................but we are busy actually writing a record, Its taking forever but its worth the wait. Anyway we have some really cool gigs in the pipe line, can't say much about it buts it's going to be killer. Stay sexy 12/4/2008 UPDATE! Easy mother fuckers, you may have noticed we have not been around as much as usual, here are the reasons and a little bit of news. Bruce is in LA at the moment so we have been unable to play live so things on the Hubble front has gone abit quite but don't worry this is just the calm before the storm, come June we're be back out on the road playing a town near you with a new release in tow, the album is coming closer too and trust me its sounding very special so we are all really looking forward to showing people that. We have a new Remix up made by the uber talents of Please Will, get yourself onto his myspace and give them a listen, he also has a tape out so make sure you get on that shizzle! Live review by Surge Music "The Birmingham Barfly is a big gig for any local band. The Hubble Constant were supporting An Albatross, an Electronic, Experimental, Progressive band from the USA. There was a fairly decent sized crowd in the room, enough to make most bands nervous. The stage became clouded with smoke and the background music faded out. Ambient samples filled the room as the band took to the stage. Then in the next minute came a full frontal assault going by the name of "You're not the man, you're the SCRAM". A wall of guitar distortion and pounding drums topped off by vocalist Nathan Coyles piercing scream. A few time signatures later and they're playing what seems like it should be a different song, although this was just the calm before the storm. The second song, "Sawn off Parker", boasted drawn out post rock verses reminiscent of Team Sleep, whilst the choruses ripped through your eardrums in the fashion of a Boeing 747 jet engine. The Hubble Constant set an excellent standard for the night. After a short instrumental interlude they kicked straight into the utterly brutal "Flip you for real" which broke down into a drawn out middle section where Nathan grabbed guitarist Bruce's microphone wrenching half of his pedals with it. This microphone, affected with delay, tremolo and various other effects gave the band a kind of Robert Smith/The Cure vibe. In the last song "Kleptograme Kleptograth" the band went all out. The song was spasmodic, with time signature changes that even the Blood Brothers would be proud of. Nathan half climbed half fell over the barrier and then proceeded to scream his lungs out as he lay on the floor in the middle of the crowd. The set ended much as it had began, with samples, ambient noise and delays to fade out. As I left, one thing was for certain, The Hubble Constant's own brand of avant-garde hardcore is sure to be influential in years to come." Live reveiw by Satellites Magazine "The hubble constant are a different story live to their recorded material due to adding a second vocalist after i sin + cos was released. The birmingham barfly was an appropriate setting to showcase a band firmly making a name for themselves with their live presence, watching as the two vocalists throw themselves around like rag dolls with one of them clearly having no regard for his own safety, this was going to be entertaining. <br><br> Unfortunately there was a down side to the show, the performance of the sound engineer left alot to be desired but I cant but this down to the group. Actually the band overcame the workmanship with a solid professional outing. They remind me of Dillinger Escape Plan with the percussion of Pelican, some times ambient but mostly manic and passionate in the best of ways. The best song of the night award went to "flip you for real" it gave me a small insight of what is to come from the band as it was the only song of the night off their forthcoming CD, even going as far as sparking a small moshpit. The Hubble Constant's career path will be an interesting and im sure a very eventful one." Think Tool's mindset, the instrumental precision of opeth, the erratic energy of every time i die and a very LA garage-rock vocal run through an amp. With an abstract name like Hubble you get what you'd expect: strange music. Diverse sounds like reggae rhythms, crashing crescendos and whispered vocals make this a particularly eerie and intruiging CD" DIE, SHELLSUIT DIE! REVIEW i sin + cos it was a challenge listening to these boyos, but I am glad I did. Taking a progressive angle to most of the left-field art-rock stuff of late they throw in more discordance and tempo changes than the rest. Imagine if you will what the Murder Of Rosa Luxembourg would sound like if they had carried .. the first album and listened to more pg99. All four tracks have there own identity and show a different facet of the bands personality. My favourite is the final track “ Bringing Down The Telescope”. Starting with samples and ambient noise before letting rip with some Blood Brothers esque vocals and riffing before dropping into a Slint like middle and finally finishing with a extended melodic build up and samples. Hearing this CD makes me want to see the boys live and then I can imagine it will all fall into place. Their first impression told me these boys had energy, driving vocals with instrumentals which switched from an assault into mellow at all the right points. Something made me think of a mash up between at the drive in, deftones, hint of blood brothers and a mix of will haven. Definitely something that fits into a crowded local scene that can stand alone and after hearing the vocalist is a brand new addition can only prove how exciting and interesting the next few months will be for these guys I shall make a point of going to see them again."
