"Chapel Hill newcomers The Huguenots let harmonies chime in beneath skinny-tied, big-hearted hooks." "Chapel Hill's excellent newcomer The Huguenots hits it harder, blasting two guitars into tight little hooks and rhythmic shimmies" -The Independent Weekly
But hey, don't take our word for it... From The Independent Weekly: INTRODUCING...06.16 THE HUGUENOTS @ LOCAL 506
Something about Chapel Hill four-piece The Huguenots is invitingly familiar, as warm and fuzzy as your favorite sweater or treasured vinyl crackling underneath a needle's touch. Part of that familiarity comes from the band's thirst for short, accessible, guitar-driven gems—the 3.5-minute pop song, naturally. The band's quick bursts of energy give it plenty of charm. They've got tightly coiled energy to offer, too: A little like big city bands The Strokes and The Libertines, The Huguenots' spring-loaded riffs and artful come-ons translate into well-played, sonic sloppiness that turns those pop sing-alongs into would-be riots. Should be fun. With The Modern Skirts and Weinland. $8/ 9 p.m. —K. Justice
Triangle Music The Huguenots played for a nice crowd and blistered through a great set of 60s and 70s tinged pop tunes. The band cranked the amps to stadium volume, swapped instruments on stage and grooved like it was their last show ever. The oh-so-catchy tune "Julia" stood out in set as well as the funky tune "She'll Take You Down." This is a band you need to see live to truly understand them. The demos on their MySpace page don't do them justice. -K. Norris
From Shindig! Magazine:
Definitely one of the best young bands on the Chapel Hill pop scene! Like the Unusual Suspects, there were a bevy of young females at the Huguenots' IPO performance, dressed in mini-skirts, french-flip hair, and paisley as these barely-college age boys do a very cool modern take on the Beatle-esque sound. We definitely need more bands like this, carrying the torch whilst putting a brand new spin on things. —D. Bash
From Independent Weekly (again!) Rock's one of the few places where being called simple can be more compliment than disparagement. In The Huguenots' case, it's a testament to the timeless allure of a ringing hook and pleasing vocals. The Chapel Hill quartet's songs inhabit the nexus of British Invasion and garage pop, as it pens lovelorn three-minute relational paeans with Beatles-esque harmonies and more bounce than 'Baywatch.' While the sound is familiar, this is hardly the economic environment where you discard what still works. —C. Parker
