Influences	“I refuse to allow the story of our time to be written without our hands,” asserts New Jersey artist/entrepreneur Charles Cording (aka the human animal) in reference to his debut project united states of auschwitz. On a journey that began with designing the first Bachelor of Arts Degree in Hip-Hop Culture, the human animal is emerging as one of today’s brightest and most controversial artists, bringing to the market one of the most visionary and complex records of the new millennium. With truly innovative approaches to sound design and storytelling, the human animal is beginning to establish himself as one of the industry’s most focused and talented songwriters and producers. On September 11th, 2008, the human animal released his debut album, united states of auschwitz, as part of a DOWNLOAD FREE – DONATE NOW campaign developed by [RE]EVOLUTION, an interactive entertainment company developing technologies to maximize the social impact of digital media. In exchange for free downloads of the album, the human animal asked that donations be made to the Iraq Veterans Against The War, an organization founded by Iraq war veterans “to give a voice to the large number of active duty service people and veterans who are against this war, but are under various pressures to remain silent.” (ivaw.org) The campaign is part of a larger [RE]EVOLUTION vision to use digital media as a means of driving capital and awareness to social organizations. As [RE]EVOLUTION prepares to launch its digital media network in 2009, Cording decided to release the album through The USA Project, an on-line magazine which will serve as the platform for the human animal’s first three releases – united states of auschwitz, flesh, and the two of clubs’ with love and rage. In addition to these new projects, the human animal will also be releasing “The Imperial Cocoon,” an extensive collection of essays exploring the science and politics behind the albums by introducing new models and perspectives to the field of ethnomusicology. Given such a novel approach to music, releasing work through an on-line platform allows the human animal to give fans and listeners unparalleled insight into the production process as well as a starting point for exploring some of today’s most urgent issues. For example, his debut album united states of auschwitz includes 100+ footnotes of lyrics providing links to articles, book excerpts, and commentary on a given subject, further re-defining the concept of intellectual entertainment by providing a detailed platform for learning and understanding today’s world. Whereas most Hip-Hop artists are characterized by diamonds and designer accessories, the success of the human animal signals the rise of a new, defiant species of rap. Taking the stage in his trademark noose and gas-mask, the human animal’s commitment to producing high-quality work is matched equally by his passion to re-define the sounds and styles of popular music. “This is not hip-hop,” he says, an odd statement coming from a person who designed the first academic curriculum dedicated to the history, science, and art of Hip-Hop Culture. Yet this assessment couldn’t be more accurate. Cording has spent just under a decade mapping the conceptual frameworks of Hip-Hop and re-applying these models in a variety of artistic contexts, a process that began while enrolled at Connecticut College. As a gifted student with a passion for thinking outside the box, his professors urged him to create his own major and to shift his focus to applying his work as a student to his work as an artist and entrepreneur. In other words, to begin approaching his artwork and business models scientifically. Many of his professors worked closely with him as he began to pioneer a new style and sound of music, an experience which birthed the idea of re-evolving culture. Rather than pursuing a Master’s degree in Anthropology after graduating in 2005, Cording continued his work in the field of ethnomusicology and in 2006 founded [RE]EVOLUTION, an interactive media network which would provide the foundation for bringing his work to the market in the form of the human animal. What can be said of an artist who instead of sampling popular hits like Diddy or soul classics like Kanye, samples real 9-1-1 calls from 9/11 and juxtaposes them with news clips on Cheney’s work with Halliburton. If united states of auschwitz is any indication of what the concept of [RE]EVOLUTION entails, ordinary folks can expect to be culture shocked as the human animal weaves together a fiercely intelligent take on what the popular definition of America has come to mean. Combining the brutal honesty of a documentary-style approach with a vividly defiant writing style, the human animal ventures where few political artists have survived, mostly notably on the album’s climax “children of war.” By drawing attention to the chilling parallels between the rape and murder of an Iraqi teen by American soldiers and the American invasion and occupation of Iraq, the human animal illustrates with haunting clarity the real-life consequences of both American hubris and the acquiescence of compliance on behalf of the American people. “We’re easily fascinated by the manufactured,” he says, “but we’re provoked by the authentic. And that’s not a “safe” experience.” This passion to explore the depths of the American experience sets the tone for an approach committed to crafting arguments that challenge the listener. But whether its commenting on American sexuality by telling listeners to “to get naked like its Abu Ghraib,” the state of racial politics by asking Kunta Kinte if he “wants his whip pimped,” or noting the nausea associated with “seeing how they advertise Lebron James when the kids who made his shoes are five,” the human animal’s penchant for treating the taboos of American society as comedic is refreshingly antagonistic, and works to compliment the more serious takes on issues such as biotechnology and global militarism. Dark and conceptual, the album’s cinematic texture introduces a new sound to the often monotonous world of mainstream production. Each track is a densely layered composition, combining vivid sound effects, rich melodies, and tightly programmed rhythms to establish a mood that transcends traditional genres. Exploiting elements from a range of musical styles, the human animal brings a sonic landscape to life by immersing listeners in what he calls “the technology and pornography of power.” This dynamic soundscape provides the canvas for the human animal’s work as a storyteller. With a fearless, razor sharp delivery, his approach to the art of lyricism is the perfect compliment to an instrumental aesthetic that prides itself on complexity and preciseness. “It began as an experiment,” he says, “and its success will be measured by its utility, whether or not people use my work as a means of empowerment.” With united states of auschwitz already beginning to break ground and a variety of projects underway, it will soon be hard not to have heard of the human animal. With ambitions that extend far beyond music, the human animal is poised to establish himself as one of the true revolutionary artists of his time.
