The Hurricanes Dance Band was formed in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, in 1989 by trombonist Ken Klettke. The band rehearsed weekly and soon began performing on a regular basis with steady gigs. In 1991, Patricia Duffy joined as vocalist (having had close to ten years' previous experience as a lounge pianist/singer/songwriter), and the band continued to thrive, playing private and corporate events, weddings, retirement homes, jazz festivals and many other venues in and around the Greater Toronto Area. Included among their previous bookings are the Royal York Hotel, York University, the Canadian Big Band Dance Festival (for which they were awarded), the Boulevard Club, the Thornhill Country Club, the Cricket Club, the Estates at Sunnybrook and the recurring Unionville Big Band Festival. The band is currently under the artistic direction of leader John McGuigan, a very talented and experienced conductor and trumpeter, and it can be reached for bookings by contacting business manager Scott Wicks, also a gifted brass player with the Hurricanes. The Hurricanes Dance Band has a wide repertoire- a unique blend of big band swing, Latin, blues, jazz and pop material, for a wide range of audiences. They are firmly established in the Toronto big band community as providing entertaining and beautifully performed music for all types of functions, including Ballroom Dance events, featuring fox trots, cha chas, tangos, waltzes, etc. The Hurricanes Dance Band is passionate about their music, and truly love performing the Big Band swing classics from the 30's and 40's- everything from Nat King Cole to Benny Goodman, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Glenn Miller, and the list goes on.
