  • Bio

The Hurtful Taunts are a ramshackle collective of god forsaken ne'er-do-wells, pick pockets and ex-circus performers led by junk artist, conjurer and hair collector Johnny Woodhams. Armed with only a vintage hat, a moulting chicken, his guitar and a suitcase full of rusted metal, Johnny booked himself into a bleak haunted Vicarage in late 2006, to record 5 tracks that had begun as an unfinished rambling novel in 2004. The characters from 'Spilled Milk' became poems that in turn became lyrics and 7 years down the line there are now somewhere in the region of sixty plus tracks gathering a fine dust in a gingham covered box next to a collection of photos of lost gloves and the skeleton of a harvest mouse. If there' s a dark story to be told we've written it...A deep-rooted love of early Americana,passed-on stories and traditional roots music permiates the songs embracing gospel, mexicana, flamenco, cow-punk and blues. The band have picked up anything that was around as well as their own beloved instruments, immersing themselves in the aged sounds of wax cylinders, scratched 78's and homemade instruments as well as channelling the screams and pleas of the criminally insane. Many of the tracks were recorded in one take and added to over time as friends old and new, hookers, beggars and a host of other charlatans came by to add their magic to the mix. An abundance of new material is now being recorded at Airtight Studios in Chorlton with failed gold prospector and bare knuckle fighter Tom Knott from the Earlies at the helm, who has also contributed trumpet, lap steel and pump organ. The well is deep and there's more bodies and to pull out... with every song having its own related artworks, costumes and attributed text, photographs, forthcoming film and striptease..... long may it continue.. <P..
