The Hyacinths are truly a product of the modern age, having been formed from an online connection. Guitarist William King’s myspace.com presence (www.myspace.com/themoonandshadows) was found by vocalist/keyboardist Ross Henderson who was drawn to the Cocteau Twins/ Cure – influenced tracks, and the two maintained casual correspondence for a few years. When Henderson decided to return to the Atlanta area he contacted King to get together and play. A few months later the band has an upcoming release By the Pearly Lights, and shows to be scheduled in and around the Atlanta area.
The Hyacinths are best described as Shoegaze or Goth-Rock, but with unbridled passion replacing the cool detachment often associated with the genres. Their collective sound is a mix of classic alternative influences. King’s guitar sound is reminiscent of Robin Guthrie (Cocteau Twins) and Robert Smith (The Cure), with the occasional nod to noisier bands like My Bloody Valentine and Jesus and Mary Chain. Henderson’s vocals range from an intimate croon to an operatic scream, adding to some of The Hyacinths’s more intense moments. Together these elements combine to create a dramatic new style anchored in solid musical roots.
