Based in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, The Hypsys are an eclectic trio of highly skilled and driven musicians. Formed in early 2007 from members of other local bands, they immediately began writing music they refer to as “progressive-jazz-rock-fusion-soul-funk.” Since then, they have written several original compositions and continue to write in preparation for their first studio album. In a short time, they have garnered a reputation for being a very original act, not only with their intricate original arrangements but also with their wide variety of covers, including The Beatles, Frank Zappa, Steely Dan, and Phish.
Guitarist and vocalist Bo Hembree, along with bassist David Ray, are studying jazz at the University of Alabama. This influence shows in their originals and in some of their versions of jazz standards that can be heard at their shows. Drummer Paul Oliver is also a music major at the University of Alabama, where he has studied extensively in classical and jazz percussion. This kind of intense study has added to the intricacy of a live performance of The Hypsys.
The Hypsys have played shows in Tuscaloosa, Decatur, and Birmingham, including opening for Col. Bruce Hampton and the Quark Alliance featuring Grant Green Jr., SkyHi, Tuscapalooza Festival, and benefits for the WVUA radio station. Having utilized their live demo to its extent, the Hypsys will enter the studio in summer 2008 to record their self-titled debut album.
