The Icebox is a creative music series based in Columbus, Ohio founded in 2004. Icebox is committed to a big-tent philosophy of creative music, but admittedly our focus tends to be on free jazz and improvised music more so than other forms. However- stress- we are always open to doing different things.
We have a definite focus on touring artists as there is a void in the city for creative music venues where touring artists can play. Here are a few musicians and groups we have hosted over the years: Tom Abbs, Tatsuya Nakatani, Billy Bang, Nicole Mitchell, Matt Lavelle, Andrew Bishop, David Boykin, Lukas Ligeti, Andrew Lamb, Napoleon Maddox, GO!, Yuganaut, Frequency Response, Concurence, IsWhat. We usually have local opening acts, and the series now is more tied into what our local scene than it ever has been. In fact, the inspiration provided by these shows has spurred some of us to action in forming our own creative music collective: THE OUT-POST (Check the MySpace page for us below.)
We try to present at least two shows a month, and events are held at various locations in Columbus. Our current host venue is Milo Elektric. (Please support Elektric on other programming nights.)
The bottom line of this series: to do our part in attempting to cultivate a local audience for free jazz, improvised music and other progressive and experimental music forms in the city of Columbus and surrounding areas. As mentioned, there is little of this programming here and as such there is really no in-built following for what we're doing so we have to be content to build incrementally and make a point of building relationships with both musicians and our audience.

No wait -- that was Skylab. Damn, how many experimental venues can there be in Columbus?! I'll have to get on your series next time I'm passing through.
I felt pretty warm and cozy in your Icebox after I played there with Shelf life last month. Thanks for making Columbus such a nice hang (I think it was the tacos that brought it to the next level).
