    The Idle Hour's Interests
GeneralBooks, Music, Film, Theatre, Art, Football, Travel, Food and Drink - I'm interested in most things really, always keen to try something new but I do like the simple things in life - dinner with friends, walking my dog, drinking in my favourite bars on a week night when it's quiet etc!
MusicA real mix, it totally depends on my mood! At the shop I listen to lots of alternative, easy to listen to but noticeable rather than just background music - I think it adds to the feel of the shop. At home I'm an indie kid, everything from The Killers to Feeder but I have to say that I'm a film soundtrack junkie and they make up a large amount of my collection! Favourites include the soundtracks from Amelie, Grosse Pointe Blank and any from a Tarantino film.

About me:
Myspace Codes Hi! My name is Anys and I own a small independent book shop in Horsforth, just outside Leeds. I've been open almost two years now and love it! I wanted to make the shop the sort of place that I would like to spend time, somewhere everyone and anyone feels comfortable coming so I have cushioned areas for little ones and comfy sofas for adults. I play different music thats in keeping with the ethos of the shop so interesting lesser known artists as well as local musicians. I try to sell a real mix of everything in the shop but not really the sort of things that you'll get in the supermarkets. To me it is vital that I know the stock I carry so I read as much as possible and talk to others about what they are reading - that means that my stock in about 95% something that either I have read, I know someone who has read it or i have read about it. I try to get new interesting books in and love finding new authors and encouraging others to do the same. Just into my first year I started running two reading groups and now I have four groups for adults and two for under 16s which are great fun and you meet such a range of people - let alone read things you wouldn't have picked up ordinarily. I also run writing groups and am trying to host as many author events as possible. Check out my other website www.the-idle-hour.co.uk MySpace Maps

City Smells - the BOOK

City Smells - the BOOK

'City Smells' is a new literary project set up by the Edit Red Writing Community.

We are running three writing competitions, Flash Fiction, Creative Non-Fiction and Poetry, all with the theme 'City Smells. The winners of each of these competitions will win $100. But more than this, we will take the best work from each competition and compile a paperback 'City Smells' anthology. The writers who make it into the 'City Smells' anthology will each receive free copies of the book and be paid a royalty in book sales.

To submit to these competition and stand a chance of being published in the 'City Smells' book you must be a member of Edit Red, as the submission process is automated. Joining Edit Red and entering these competitions is 100% free. If you make it into the book, we will pay royalties based on book sales.

Edit Red has existed for many years and was created and is still managed today by non-fiction author Alan Emmins, creative writing teacher Chris Lee Ramsden and literary reviewer Sean Merrigan.

If you are not already a member, we hope you will join and take part in this great literary event. Visit editred.com for free membership and free entry.

Regards
Alan, Sean and Chris

Birthday Gift

I woke from out a quiet, peaceful sleep
To hear the whispered sound of falling rain;
And dreamily, I thought that I might keep
Its gentle tapping on my windowpane.
As I put on a robe and stepped outside,
I caught the sight of blossoms on a tree;
The Peach had bloomed, and stood with blushing pride,
Unfolding flowers for the world to see.
Their shy, pink petals shimmered in the sun,
And rainbow water droplets held my gaze --
A gift of beauty -- morning just begun --
A harbinger of many fine Spring days.
I stood in swirling color, hair all wet --
That birthday morning I will not forget.

Happy Birthday! Hope you have a truly beautiful one. :)
