Influences
Idlers take much of their inspiration from the Roots Reggae music of the mid 1970's. Staying true to the conscious voice of Roots Reggae, Idlers lyrics speak of the human condition, discussing issues of war, capitialism, social and personal struggle.
Musically, Idlers are hard-hitting, relentlessly pushing the genre to its limits, cultivating a sound that combines Reggae, Ska and Dub, with seasonings of African and Cletic grooves.
Specifically, Idlers are influenced by Burning Spear, The Congos, The Upsetters, Desmond Dekker, Prince Buster, The Gladiators, Culture, Steel Pulse, The Clash, The English Beat, The Skatalites, Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Max Romeo, U-Roy, Lee Sratch Perry, and King Tubby.
Reggae from the Rock
Idlers are an eleven-piece reggae circus from St. John's, Newfoundland. Their unique sound comes from a love for reggae, ska, and afro-beat, peppered with a little Celtic. Ringmaster Mark Wilson fronts a solid rhythm section, and heavy horns, bringing audiences to frenzy since they began in April 2006.
Idlers won Galaxie Rising Star of the CBC Award and were named Alternative Artist/Group of the Year at the 2008 Music NL Conference and Awards Show in Gander, NL. In the week leading up to the awards conference, The Radar Report named Idlers their featured artists of the week on XMU radio. Hometown fans voted Idlers as Best Loud Band and Best Band to Dance To (2008 and Best Live Band (2007) in St. John’s. In May 2008, Idlers were featured artists in the Reggae Festival E-Guide Newsletter.
Idlers debut CD, Corner (available online at idlers.ca and on itunes), was released in December 2007 and has received excellent reviews Nationally and Internationally. In March, 2009, Idlers are thrilled to be be traveling to Woodstock, New York, to record their second album. Darryl Jenifer, Bedouin Soundclash producer and Bad Brains bassist, will produce the album with 2001 grammy-award winner Phil Burnett as engineer.
Idlers perform throughout Central and Atlantic Canada and are planning to hit the rest of the country this summer.
