In the Summer of 1991, there was a college Indie Rock/Hardcore band floating around Lancaster, Pa.. They were Called the Incoherents. Up to that point they had played a few shows around campus, played the Chameleon Club, and were set to play "The Cove Bar and Spill" annual pig roast in the backyard of Ray Shwartz's house. That's when I met them, and from there they went places never realistically envisioned. I was the "Manager," so to speak and I'm responsible for keeping the word alive and well in the Myspace world. The Incoherents made demo tapes in a CD world, played all ages shows in bars and clubs, and eventually achieved the internal band goal of playing on stage at the legendary CBGB in New York City. Along the way we all had a blast, meeting and hanging out with fans, bands, and even a wayward manager or two. We took road trips, Maui Wowi even met his future wife on the one to Atlantic City, NJ. We didn't make any money, never quite got to the point of getting signed or anything on wax. We made it through three different guitarists and a million little crisis (Not to mention every cheap beer on the planet!!), but it worked, and man was it a great time. It was the beginning of the Lancaster Explosion, if you want to call it that. A time in history that seems to be unique, in that our little area was home to some of the best bands in the world. LIVE, the Ocean Blue, The Innocence Mission, Suddenly Tammy!, on the National Stage, and a gazillion others hiding in the regional Spotlight. Spirit Assembly, The Oogies, Brom Bones, Deadlove, Element, Nothing But Oregano, Squash, and a ton of other bands I can't seem to remember at the moment, were all poised to take on the indie rock scene and make an impact. Maybe it was just me, but I think that time and place was a very special thing indeed, maybe you'll agree with me.
The Incoherents recorded their first tape on the four track at the Franklin and Marshall Radio Station Studio, WFNM. It was called Cartoons and Beer. Lunk followed a year later and was recorded at Kenny Heitmuellers "Catbox" studios (His basement). A four song EP so to speak was recorded at Lebanon Valley College and was named "Socrates Johnson". Everything after that was recorded live at the Chameleon club.... We even left a board tape at CBGB's....... that was Our New "Manager" Phil....... I coulda Smacked him......!!!
I ripped all the stuff we had on tape last year and made CD's of everything for Christmas Presents for the Band. There were a few stragglers that requested MP3's of the songs, and I think Carl, the SInger put a few up on his webblog over at Bigfool, but other than that I believe this to be the only place to hear the Incos on the web. Maybe some of the other bands from this era will start posting some stuff as well.... Enjoy!!!
