DJ Rebel. Born Leo Magbanua Resplandor June of 1989 in Manila Philippines. A half Cebuano and half Tagalog who came from a family of good musicians. The Resplandor Family was known at Infanta, Quezon (About 90 miles northeast from Manila) to be a family good singers and musicians. Although not everybody in the family are into music and not good at it. He is one of the family members who excelled in art and music. His love for musical instruments came from his Magbanua side of the family. Being born in Manila. He was not exposed to his Cebuano side in an early age. Nevertheless, his very trip to Cebu changes his life. He was given his first guitar. And unbelievably. He learns how to play the instrument in less than two weeks. That is when he and everybody realized that he is musically inclined.
His natural gifts became a gateway for him to be one of the most popular kids from grade school to high school. He studied grade school in Manila at an exclusive catholic school. Studying at a school run by nuns. Popular music such as Rap, Rock, Pop and Alternative was never allowed to be played and tolerated. Being charismatic in school, and I guess being an altar boy helped him change the game. In addition, he changes the way nuns who run the school think about music. Not even a teenager, he produced and promoted the very first student music related show/party in school. The very first approved by the school. Since then, his classmates, schoolmates and friends always turn to him when they need help in music and to be approve by the school to perform and to do a music related show. During his high, school days in San Francisco, California. He was often asked by school to perform. AS well as his schoolmate to be in their show. Therefore, they finally ask him to do a small after school workshop teaching how to play instruments. Pushing back to the early 90's. His first exposure to hip-hop was Francis M. Who pioneered hip-hop culture in The Philippines. While following Francis M's career. He was exposed to one of the best DJ in the Philippines. Francis M's friend and now DJ Rebel's personal friend. DJ Kimozave. Although Kimozave made a mark on Rebel. It was not Kimozave who gave him enough reason to use turntable. In 1996, while watching T.V. He saw someone that will change his life. Growing up as a lead guitarist and playing several musical instruments. He never thought that there's nothing much a turntable would offer until he saw Q-Bert. In 1997, he tried the turntables. He got his first his turntables 1998. That same year, He started going to battles which he won several local DJ battles, regional battles and DMC runner up. Year 2000, He got a hold of a Playstation game where you can create your own beats. In 2002, Dj Rebel decided to make beats for mix tape purposes. Something he could scratch and use for remix. He never thought that producing would catch on to him. Throughout the year, Aside from winning several Dj Battles. He also won several battle of the bands. Then he Deejay at several hot spot spots such as MILK, 26 Mix, Club Cocomo, Mission Rock, DNA Lounge and the list goes on. Deejay at the Philippines hot spot such as Bom Bom Bar, Vudu Lounge, Club V, Sunflower City, Prince of Jaipur and so on. He also deejay at several street and beach parties in and outside of San Francisco and outside the country. He also deejay and performed in the same platform with several local legends and artist such as Casual, Q-Bert, Souls of Mischief’s, Mystic, Zion I, Ras K' Dee, Los Indios Bravos, Trapp and Prodigal Son from 6000Goonz and the list just go on. His most recent projects. He produced a track with out of Bay Areas Pinoy's Finest Emcees A-Bone called. “The Main Event”. He also produced beats for several great artist (Will not mention name until the tracks are done). Then produced a beat for the Philippine’s dynamic trio. A.M.P. (Aero, Marquiss and PhD). Just like the culture. Dj Rebel will never stop elevating and improving. In addition, just like Hip-Hop. He will never stop.
