The Jazztronauts are a young, award winning Bay Area trio that plays a variety of swing, funk, contemporary jazz, fusion and be bop. The Jazztronauts have headlined at many venues around the Bay Area including: Throckmorton Theatre, Jazzschool in Berkeley, the Boom Boom Room, Ondine's, Rustico and for the first time, on August 25, Yoshi's in San Franciso. The Jazztronauts won the award for "Best Youth Combo" at both the 2006 & 2007 "Santa Cruz Jazz Festivals" and at those festivals, all band members won "Outstanding Soloist Awards." In both 2007 and 2008, the Jazztronauts were selected to perform as a part of the "Rising Stars Series" at the Jazz school, a two week long concert series meant to bring young, talented musicians into the fore front of the local jazz community. Most recently in 2008, the Jazztronauts have been selected to perform as a part of the prestigious Bread and Roses arts program. Michael Nourafshan, the group's drummer, has been playing for 7 years and has studied with the likes of Mike Clarke, Tootie Heath, and current mentor, Vince Lateano. Max Chanowitz, the group's pianist, has been studying music for over 11 years and his current mentor is Berkley pianist, Susan Muscarella. Max began playing classical music at the age of 7 but like many great musicians, he discovered the beauty of improvisation and now primarily serves as a jazz pianist. Max has composed many beautiful and complex original pieces including “Mars Mission” and “Outro,” a quick bebop song inspired greatly by Keith Jarret and the late Bill Evans. The group's guitarist and bassist, Erik Strand, is a self taught musician whose versatility serves as the foundation of the group. Erik brings an outstanding ear and a knack for improvisation to the band, and he enables the Jazztronauts to venture into all sub-genres of jazz. Many of Erik’s originals appear on the Jazztronauts first independently produced album, Space Crisis.
