The Jealous Gods

-Youll Want To Wake Up Now-

By Bob Silvestri

bobsilvestri@bestofwny.com

Purveyors of fine music arise and get yourself a copy of the new CD from The Jealous Gods titled Youll Want To Wake Up Now. The band Dave Hill (vocals/bass) and Jeff Miers (guitars) along with uber drummer Eric Starr have put together ten dramatic songs for your listening pleasure. Densely layered guitars, bass and drums created a texture of music that transports you along on a musical journey. From the opening alarm clock ringing of the title cut Youll Want To Wake Up Now to the final notes of Existential Dreads this is on par with Zappa, Leonard Cohen or latter day Wilco. Liner note lyrics help you to further experience the songs along with stellar production by the band and mastering by the legendary Nick Blagona for a total aural adventure. Highlights here include Cant Do Much, Bushcheney, Its What It Is and Throw along with the two before mentioned tracks. 8/2005 ARTVOICE CD Review

Dont call it a comeback. Do call it something of a curveball. For over a decade, bassist Dave Hill and guitarist Jeff Miers were at the core of Buffalos beloved multi-dimensional rock and roll outfit The Tails. The whole time, however, there was a secret. Behind bassist Dave Hill's mild-mannered facade there was a frontman waiting to break through. Now with The Jealous Gods debut CD, Youll Want To Wake Up Now, the cat is out of the bag. Hills formidable presence as a singer/lyricist is on display alongside Miers ever impressive six-string ability. And while The Tails stock and trade was a kind of Police meets Stones, as Jealous Gods Hill and Miers (along with Tails drummer Eric Starr) have dived into a wellspring of alt-guitar rock influences. The title track has Miers snaking through an echoing guitar line like U2s Edge while Hill sounds like The Flaming Lips Wayne Coyne with lyrics warning of a dark political climate. Protest runs through Wake Up Now as an album, most pointedly with the diatribe again the current administration called BushCheney. The Gods ably muster up a Radiohead atmosphere on Cant Do Much with Hill pining away with confessional lyrics and perfect vocal histrionics. Miers guitar growls out a heavy psych-blues lead on the biting, poetic closer Existential Dreads. The Jealous Gods have pulled off an impressive feat with their debut.

8/2005 ARTVOICE - CD Release Show Preview - Saturday August 13 THE JEALOUS GODS

10pm. Nietzsches, 248 Allen St.

Not many local bands can pull off the feat of having their first gig double as their CD release party. Fewer still can enlist the talents of an internationally known recording artist and still hold their own. For the past year, Dave Hill (pictured left) and Jeff Miers (pictured right), known to the local music scene for their work with The Tails and other groups, have been quietly recording a CD of original tunes in basement studios and local recording facilities. After writing, performing and producing the disc themselves (with the help of former Tails bandmate Eric Starr on drums), the duo splurged to have the mostly homemade effort mastered by famed producer Nick Blagona (Deep Purple, The Police and others). Youll Want to Wake Up Now is a full-sounding, sonic opus that appeals to fans of Radiohead, U2 and The Beatles. As the Jealous Gods, Hill and Miers have created a homespun recording that has the distinction of sounding as good as releases from major-label bands who spend hundreds of thousands of dollars (and hours) attempting the same end result. For their CD release party, Hill and Miers have recruited bass player Graham Maby (noted for his playing with Joe Jackson and many others) and former bandmates Eric and Nelson Starr (on drums and keyboards/backing vocals, respectively) to enact their musical vision. John Lombardo and the Roadhouse Gypsies share the stage.
