The johns are a punk rock disco band based in New York City. Formed in 2005, under the pretense of starting riots and getting people to dance. They've established themselves as a cult favorite in their stomping ground of NYC and beyond. Coming together from different musical backgrounds and influences, they blend punk, rave, pop, disco, rock, and theatrics seamlessly into their explosive live shows--reminiscent of the early 80's CBGBs scene and a Broadway Musical.
They've danced and screamed their way through most of the New York City hot spots including Mercury Lounge, Don Hill's, The Annex, CBGBs (RIP), Le Royale, R Bar, and Crash Mansion for CMJ 2008, and beyond — West Hollywood's Viper Room, The Beauty Bar (Vegas and San Diego), Hemlock Tavern (San Francisco), Johnny Brenda's (Philadelphia) and more. Needless to say, they've established a solid fan base in the process. Their most recent appearance at Folsom Street East saw them performing for over 10,000 screaming bears and leather daddies.
The johns Wanna Dance was recorded in a basement home studio by The johns but was mixed by Butch Vig's (Garbage, Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins) Smart Studios in Madison, WI. LOGO's Julie Bolcer describes the first two singles off their debut best — "Throughout the tune, 'Shake It,' vocalist Johnny P. sounds like Joey Ramone with more dramatic flair, supported by the epic flourishes of keyboards. Meanwhile, the lead single, 'I Want It Bad,' finds the singer with a twangy inflection, surrounded by a formula of mean guitar and rapid rhythms that could be described as white trash thrash." Their video, "Shake It", directed by documentary film maker Aaron Brookner, has gone on to be Video of the Week on LOGO's NewNowNext and stayed on the Click List for over 9 months after its debut.
D-U-M-B EP was The johns' first foray with producer Jay Braun (Cat Power, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Fiery Furnaces, Chuck D) and they are working on a full-length release with him as we speak.
The boys continue to maintain their wit, reckless abandon, and propensity to keep audiences dancing with their fists out.
