Based in Vienna, the k & l orchestra are doing their best to merge nordic melancholia and styrian folk-roots in a workable pop way, with a touch of boundless optimism. Starting with covers of 80s hits for cello and voice, they then also began performing their own compositions and are now releasing their first single, Pling Plong.
The release is accompanied by a video made using the simple rules of a new dogmatic concept, the VideoSong - what you see is what you hear (no lip-syncing for instruments or voice); if you hear it, at some point you see it (no hidden sounds). This is just one example of the duo's enthusiasm for using whatever is at hand, exploring new ideas and trying their best to get lost along the way.
From Oslo, Norway, Kyrre Kvam (voice, keyboards, guitar, pling plong machine) is constantly trying to fight his way away from the roots planted deep inside him through years of singing psalms in minor keys. He hasn't quite succeeded yet, but his thoughtful lyrics celebrate life with its many hopes, absurdities, joys and tragedies.
deeLinde (cello, voice, percussion, kazoo) spent her youth yodelling and making mischief with her sisters. She is still yodelling and making mischief, but also took time to study classical cello, though cut her studies short when she realised that there is more to life than practising Paganini.
Kvam's delicate, accomplished voice is the fine thread which unites an eclectic array of sounds, styles and themes in the k & l orchestra's songs and performances. Allied with the bare but rich voice of Gansch's cello, mellow contemplation meets lively exuberance, often with unexpected and bewitching results.
