We all use names every day - to identify ourselves, the people around us, the towns we live in, even the churches we attend. The members of Katalyst, however, have superceded the typical use of a name by taking the attention off themselves and focusing it on the bigger picture. "A catalyst is something that precipitates an event or change," said Jordan Wood, who sings and plays guitar for the group. "Our mission is wrapped up in our name. Just to play for people isn't enough - we want to be part of changing lives."
The five-member group, which is based in Lubbock, TX., came together in the fall of 2007 with the intention of building a relationship-based worship ministry "with definite roots in outreach," said lead guitarist Will Boreing. "We want to take worship to places that don't have it readily available to them and build one-on-one relationships that have long-lasting effects - not just the one-week church camp high."
In addition to Wood and Boreing, the members of Katalyst are Seth Ramirez, bass; Ryan Garza, drums; and Steven Shedd, keys. They all met as students in South Plains College's commercial music program and soon found they all led worship in their churches in some capacity or another. "When Katalyst came together we all wanted to influence other kids' spiritual growth, and you can't do that until you've formed that relationship that says, 'Hey, I trust that you care about me so I'm going to listen to what you have to say.' It's a good feeling when that happens," said Boreing.
Now that the band has played regularly in the Lubbock area, they are ready to take their music and message to other communities. "Somewhere along the line, every individual has a personal catalyst that gets them moving forward in their walk," said Wood. "Music is our way of spurring that walk with God even further."
And if their mission is wrapped up in their name, it is intertwined even further in their music.
