It has to be said that The Kirbens, named after the first two members, come from very different musical backgrounds. This is apparent in their song lyrics and performance style. The collaborations between vocalists: Music education student Kirsty Hulka and Hilton guitarist Ben Mauri have a bluesy vibe that made them a favourite at open mic nights. This popularity extended when Chiropractor Gareth Calvert joined the band and added his talent with the drums. As Kirsty says “When we met we just wanted to play and see what happened rather than trying particular styles, as I like blues, Ben likes rock and Gareth... Well he’s a case of ‘wait and see what comes out.’” In recent times Ben Caddy has been adding his talent with the Bass guitar during performances, and Dave Willis has made a couple of memorable gigs with his divine trumpeting. After scoring countless gigs around Perth and between overseas travels the band has been working on their playlist and hopes 2009 will be a year of consolidation. ..
hey have you had any thoughts of playing times for thurs? i was just gonna play it by ear but people keep asking me about it. everything else sweet? if you need a hand at all just ask. leigh
yeah well we will be up for playing with you guys anytime. what venues are you thinking of? we are in the same boat, gotta get a decent demo. if the venue is ok wth 3 bands i think go with that. our bass player does solo stuff, bout 20min set, if you really want another act. he's called espey.
well if he doesnt mind our drummer using it thatd be cool with us i think.i dont know how many bands they have either. would it really matter though? it might bring more numbers or sumthing. do you know anyone who might want to play?
hey we are all good to play with you guys at the swan on the 11th. thanks heaps for that. do you guys want to share backline or anything, make life a bit easier? i know my guys arent too fussy with gear but if you are we are cool to bring our own.
im pretty sure we are clear to do that date, sounds sweet. ill ask the troops and give you a def answer very soon, but pencil us in for now. cheers. leigh
luke rinaldi books all the swan now i think. he also books the rosemount and manages some pretty wicked bands. hopefully ill hear back from him soon. and yeah we are keen to do anything but we havent got a crowd that follows us everywhere unfortunately. catchya
yeah that sounds pretty cool. iv already emailed rinners bout the swan, he had a date late oct but iv asked for late nov so our student members can chill for exams. iv asked rachel and henry as well. also a band called the shallows and probably old croak, but not all on one gig. just want to do a few small shows over summer, we will have lots of recording and work on. ill let you know if something comes up if you do the same. cheers.
Thanks a million; great work last night hey, really enjoyed your set! I've still got one of your songs stuck in my head :P The competition was ridiculously tight hey, I haven't got a clue how they could have possibly come to any conclusion at all!
You would have been talking to Karri last night :-) Yeah we always love to tee up gigs with cool bands so we'll definetly hit you up if we are getting anything together and of course hopefully visa versa! :P
About a month ago I put on a Next Big Thing related show (Revenge Of The Horns) with some of the groove based bands from The Next Big Thing Comp, so on a similar train of thought it'd be a lot of fun to do a show called REMATCH or something along those lines promoting the "see these bands in a more intimate light playing a decent sized set" mentality.
Ie:
The Kirbens are seeing red and want to take The Brow down. It's owwwnnnnn. REMATCH. Haha I dunno. When the busy period finishes, I'll hit up some of the other bands too and hopefully we can get something together.
Hey guys, cheers for the add and congrats on getting through as well! Who else placed in your heat? I wasn't able to make the other semis so I'm a bit out of the loop. Anywho I tried to have a listen to your tunes but the computers at TAFE don't have flash so I'll have to have a squiz later. Cya next Saturday anyway :-)
hrrmmm. bass players are indeed an elusive species. Claire (Clare?) from choir was telling me last week that she owns a bass and is quite proficient. But that’s the only person I can think of!
Sure thing guys, a gig would be sweet. Sometime after September 20th coz we are having a month off to write new stuff and then have 2 gigs on 18th and 19th.
Let us know what your thinking an we can organise something.
Hi guys, you have great songs on your profile! I liked them all, but coming from my musical back ground I especially enjoyed Why Do I Feel This Way. Hope to hear you live very soon. Respect and best wishes, Chris.
