The Kitchen was born in Miami Beach at the Seagull Hotel in 1988 as an Industrial, Progressive and Hard-core club. It acquired it's clever name by being built in the kitchen of the hotel. Among the bands that performed there were Killing Joke, A Split Second & Alien Sex Fiend.
In December of 1992, the hotel was sold to the Days Inn Corporation and the club closed down. On April of 1993, it reopened in Coconut Grove at the old Rocky Horror Theater under new ownership by former Kitchen Club employees, Peter V. and Aldo G. (who kept the original staff of DJ's, security, and bartenders). The new Kitchen had an enormous Grand Opening which caused much chaos in the Grove.
The new Kitchen didn't appeal anymore to the old South Beach crowd because of changes in the music format... less mainstream, more Electro and E.B.M., Industrial, and the introduction of underground Gothic Rock and Darkwave. After a couple years of creating and supporting South Florida's Industrial/Gothic scene came to an end in 1995 because of our new landlord, the US Postal Service Office not honoring our long term lease agreement.
A year passed, we reopened in the Miami Design District. It was a nice location with three rooms, two dance floors, and an outdoor patio. But since we had an ...... for a landlord we chose to relocate.
10 months later, we reopened at Biscayne Boulevard. A two story building with a private parking lot. We were opened Friday and Saturday nights. When summer kicked in, we had Thursday nights commited to the Backdoor. Over the years many underground acts performed such as: Covenant
Biscayne Blvd. venue (RIP)
2 years later, the Biscayne location came to an abrupt end because of an overlooking of liquor licenses. Months later we relocated in Coconut Grove within "The Chili Pepper". It was fun, but it was time to try to return to our roots by coming back to South Beach. Where we already had a Thursday night running at the club "Zanzibar". The Mission was our new home for a few months until the owner decided to sell the venue. Then we headed over to 5922/Club Steel. We resided at SOHO Lounge in the Design District for 2 years.
We are no longer hosting parties at Soho Lounge. Soho has officially closed. For updates on Kitchen Club, Danse Society, Saint Saturday, 4bidden Society future events please join our emailing list kitchenevents@gmail.com
