THE NOVAKS!

..
Mark Bragg, The Human Soundtrack, Sherry Ryan, Jill Porter, Colleen Power, Blair Harvey, Brian Byrne, The Ennis Sisters, The Coast Guard, Sean Panting, Jacinda Beals, Janet Cull Band, Jenny Gear, Rex Goudie, The Punters, Brothers In Stereo, Andrew LeDrew, Barry Canning, Ron Hynes, Shaye, Damhnait Doyle, Kim Stockwood, Jason Greeley, Kathy Phippard, The Haters, Hey Rosetta!, Lizband, Great Big Sea, Cherie Pyne, Crush, Ryan's Fancy, Figgy Duff, Marceno, The Nordic Beat,
Thomas Trio and The Red Albino (RIP)
and most all Newfoundland and Labrador music.
Other musical interests include the following...
a-ha. Duran Duran/Arcadia/Power Station. The Cure.
The Beatles, (together and solo), Bryan Ferry, Neil Young, The Cars, Bruce Springsteen, AC/DC, Rush, INXS, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Roy Orbison, Patsy Cline, Coldplay, Doves, Richard Ashcroft, Supertramp, Oasis, Stars, Amy Millan, Jason Collett, Feist, U2, Sam Roberts, Matt Mays and El Torpedo, Two Hours Traffic, Avril Lavigne, Christina Aguilera, Madonna, Prince, Crowded House, Split Enz, Depeche Mode, Strange Advance, The Spoons, Ron Sexsmith, Sinead O'Connor, Joel Plaskett Emergency, Sarah Slean, The Trews, Sloan, Leonard Cohen, Gordie Sampson, The Cottars, and a host of others, especially those forgotten bands of the 1980s that you'd never admit to liking...Let's hear it for T'Pau, One To One and A Flock of Seagulls!
I'm also really getting into East Coast music, namely rock and roll from Atlantic Canada. There's some fine bands and artists out there if you want to look.
Match Point, any Scarlett Johansson flick, Vintage horror, Anything Hitchcock (especially Vertigo, Frenzy and Psycho), Canadian films, Hammer horror films from the 1960s and 70s (I wish I could find Lust for a Vampire), Asian horror (especially Audition, One Missed Call, Phone, Whispering Corridors, A Tale of Two Sisters and Memento Mori), Edward Scissorhands, anything with Tim Burton's name attached to it. I also love Woody Allen flicks, and any movies that aren't blockbusters.
The Rick Mercer Report, Hatching, Matching & Dispatching, This Hour Has 22 Minutes, Rabbittown, the news, Trailer Park Boys, The X-Files, The Lone Gunmen, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Buffy, Angel, The Twilight Zone.
..Anybody that is in a band. Neil Young, for standing up for what he believes in, and never selling out. Michael Ryder, Patrick Roy, Guy Lafleur, David Cronenberg, Alfred Hitchcock, Woody Allen, Ron Hynes, Dick Nolan, Spiderman, Roger Ebert, Darth Vader, Stephen King, Johnny Cash.
Welcome to my place in this big, bad world of myspace. If you live in St. John's and enjoy live music, you already should know me. I'm probably the only guy in clubs who isn't in a drinking stupor, but actually LISTENS and ENJOYS the music that is played nearly every weekend. In my real life, I'm an award-winning entertainment journalist based in Newfoundland, and I'm also a college radio dj with CHMR-FM. In other words, I survive.
I don't have cable, but I am in love with a great gal, and have been in love with her since 1990. Yes, you read that right. I call her Miss Snuffleupagus, because she is rarely seen with me in my downtown jaunts. She has as much interest in it as I do Twilight.
In my dream life, I'm married to Scarlett Johansson or maybe Evan Rachel Wood.
Ah, but here is reality. I'm usually spotted at thrift places, digging for old VHS horror flicks, compilation CDs and tapes, the occasional 8-track (my portable player is eating the tapes now though) and I'm a vinyl junkie, especially vintage Newfoundlandia. I own almost 500 45s, including such classics as Riders On The Storm and the not so classic music of my day. (Fascinated by Company B.)
I am probably one of the biggest fans of the Montreal Canadiens anywhere and here is one of my greatest memories, the 1993 Stanley Cup win.
I love live music in St. John's, checking out all the hip-happening vibes of places like The Ship, CBTGs, The Levee, Distortion, The Rose and Thistle and others, depending on who is playing.I own WAY too much music. Probably in the 1000's now. I'm into Serena Ryder's new album lately. I can sing, somewhat. I tried out for Canadian Media Idol and did ok. I didn't win... It's part of my job...
I love movies. I always have. But I'm a little different than most. I LOVE black and white flicks, especially Manhattan and Psycho. I think The Exorcist is the creepiest, scariest flick ever. I also really liked Basic Instinct, but not the sequel.
I haven't been to a movie theatre in eons. I hate theatre crowds. I'll wait for the DVD, thank you very much or VHS for that matter.
There's a unique attraction for me to Canadian actresses and Canadian film. Molly Parker, Sarah Polley, David Cronenberg, some Atom Egoyan.
Want to hear my radio voice? check out Somewhere Between Waking and Sleeping at 9 am Saturdays or Upon This Rock at 10 am Saturdays on CHMR-FM! (http://www.chmr.ca)
My strengths are: the love of local Newfoundland culture, a brain filled with useless knowledge (which comes in handy for Jeopardy and Trivial Pursuit games), and I'm also a very good conversationalist and listener. I'm also a Hollywood junkie...and I admire quite a few female celebs. No, I'm not a stalker, I'm an admirer! (Really, I am!)
I'm a voracious reader of Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly, and Premiere.
I also love a lot of Canadian music...especially Atlantic Canadian rock and roll, and can do a pretty impressive Darth Vader impersonation. (It works better in the cold air.) If I had the brain of Rex Murphy, the humour of Mark Critch, and the looks of James Marsters (Spike on Buffy), things would be awesome.
Anyway, I hope to be your friend.
CELEBS, MODELS, COOL CANADIAN BANDS, AND OF COURSE, NEWFOUNDLANDERS.
I would love to meet the following famous women, because I adore them so.
Scarlett Johansson (the goddess of Modern Hollywood), Kirsten Dunst, Sarah Polley, Mischa Barton, Thora Birch, Dominique Swain, Evan Rachel Wood and Katherine Isabelle.
As for others I'd like to meet... I would love to meet Duran Duran and thank them for being such a part of my musical existence.
NEIL YOUNG is the Greatest Canadian and I have now seen him live. Cool.
Bruce Springsteen's Tunnel of Love is one of my fave albums of all time. Thanks, Bruce. My CD copy of the album was originally owned by Seamus O'Regan of Canada AM fame. Thanks for selling it to Fred's, Seamus.
I would have love to have met Johnny Cash and had dinner with Vincent Price, Roy Orbison, Bela Lugosi, Boris Karloff, Lon Chaney, Jr and Alfred Hitchcock....preferably all at the same time.
Here are some cool people I have met... Fergie of the Black Eyed Peas, Chantal Kreviazuk, Joel Plaskett, Matt Mays, Ron Jeremy, Jean Chretien, (former Prime Minister of Canada,) Paul Martin (another former PM), Brian Tobin, Marc Garneau, George Thorogood, Snoop Dogg, Daniel Lanois, Ron Sexsmith, Sarah Slean, Eddie Money, Russell Crowe, Guy Lafleur, Steve Shutt, Frank Mahovlich, Chris Nilan, Bob Gainey, Ken Dryden. Patrick Roy. There are many others..but these are a few of my faves. I've also kissed The Stanley Cup and held the Calder Cup.
I also like talking to cool people, especially Newfoundlanders...We rock, eh b'y?
