No trends. No gimmicks. No compromise. The Known World is the sum of its members’ passions, drive, and collective desire to create a fresh, powerful sound in rock music. Since coming together in the spring of 2005, they have been heating up the stage with a rare blend of classic pop sensibilities layered with funk and jazz, delivered with a relentless blues-based rock n’ roll ethos. The unique combination of seasoned talent and youthful drive has enjoyed great public response since its bare infancy when the band released Synaesthesia, its debut EP, in April of 2005.
Showcasing local progeny James Graff on guitar, Dan Bozek on bass, Ben Pattak on drums, and Nathaniel Minto on lead vocals, The Known World’s members are no strangers to the stage. Veterans of several well known local and regional acts including Tangerine, The Joe Zelek Band, Beijing Diary, Jim DiSpirito & Big World and others, the members of the Known World have either performed or shared the stage with everyone from Hootie and the Blowfish to Brett Michaels, Bill Deasy, Billy Price, Roger Humphries, The Clarks, and Fuel. While all under 25, these four young men have collectively played in almost every major city in the US and eastern Canada.
After a full year of playing shows as a unit and constantly peppering their material with different styles and influences, The Known World have arrived at a truly unique sound they call their own. Their new CD, A Year Assembled, compiles the past year of the band’s recorded work. Included in the new disc are tracks from April 2005’s Synaesthesia, August 2005’s Here Be Dragons, and five new originals the group recently recorded during the course of 2006. The Pittsburgh Post Gazette’s Ed Masley recently wrote about the band’s sound, commenting, "... vocals on the soulful side, big hooks and guitar heroics ranging from infectious riffs to epic solos."
In a live setting, The Known World combines the adventurous spirit of the blues-based rock improvisation of late 60s and early 70s hard rock groups with the modern sound of British pop rock. Each live show is a unique experience all its own, with performances that sometimes stretch into Zeppelin-esque three hour marathons. Thunderous drum solos, blazing guitar leads, fleet-fingered bass work, and wailing vocals all showcase four musicians with complete virtuoso control over their respective instruments. Seeing is believing; The Known World is a band truly not to be missed.
