Originally from Boston, MA, Lance Houston (Berklee College of Music, 1995) and his talented jazz quintet produce magical and imaginative interpretations of jazz standards. Lance Houston has performed internationally with his distinctive approach to jazz improvisation. Lance Houston has studied jazz with Jeff Stout, Lin Biviano and many others. Many jazz listeners compare Lance Houston's smooth flugelhorn delivery as reminiscent of Freddie Hubbard, Hugh Masekela and Woody Shaw. After a five year hiatus, Lance Houston has returned to the east coast jazz scene with his unique blend of vibrant harmonics and innovative and originally written jazz tunes. MIHOKO ABE (Piano) Mihoko Abe, a jazz and latin pianist from Sapporo in Japan, has studied at Berklee College of Music where her major influenses were Joanne Brackeen and Harvey Diamond. Mihoko Abe plays an excellent well-blended sound and features not only jazz standards but, many of her own compositions. You can hear & feel what her soul is saying through her original works. Mihoko’s CD is currently in progress and she plans to release it in the spring of 2009. Each spring Mihoko travels back to Japan to assist at a jazz workshop with Tiger Okoshi, Joanne Brackeen, Yoron Israel, Jim Odgren, Dave Clark teach and she plays piano with them. In 2008, she did her first jazz club tour in Hokkaido, Japan with local musicians. Mihoko has been playing actively in the United States at such venues as Les Zygomates, The Beehive, Brasserie Joe’s, The Glory Lounge, The Bangkok Paradise, Mannahatta (New York with Cameron Brown on bass) Arturo’s (New York) to name a few. Mihoko’s latin music influences are fueled by playing with latin jazz and several salsa groups such as La Seleccion Perfecta, Boston Latin Band, Camelia Latin Jazz and others. A few of their venues include the Lowell Puerto Rican Festival, the Rhode Island Puerto Rican Festival, and many others. She has also played with popular salsa singer “Giro”and legendary trumpeter Ray Gonzalez. Mihoko’s CD is currently in progress and she plans to release it in the spring of 2009. For over two decades, Cornell "Sugarfoot" Coley, M.Ed (Drums) has expressed his interest in, and commitment to, Afro-Brazilian and Afro-Cuban music and dance traditions through several paths: as a performer in dance and drums; as a founder and leader of musical groups; as a teacher; and as a developer of educational curriculum focusing on the arts. Earning the name "Sugarfoot" through his dancing ability, Cornell Coley was born in Kingston, Jamaica of Cuban and Jamaican parents. His family immigrated to Boston when he was four years old and he began studying drums five years later. While an undergraduate at Tufts University, he started his dance career during a visit to Ghana. After earning his B.A. in English at Tufts, Mr. Coley subsequently studied cultural anthropology at UCLA and graduated with a Masters in Education from Cambridge College. Alongside his educational ventures, Mr. Coley is an active and seasoned performer in Afro-latin music and dance. As a musician (with the motto "Have Drums, Will Travel"), he plays the drum kit, timbales, congas, bongos, Afro-Cuban and Brazilian percussion, and carnival drums. Dave Shoudy (Bass) grew up in the Albany, NY area and started playing bass at the age of 9. Through the age of 18, he focused primarily on classical bass, playing in various orchestras through high school. In 2002, he was selected to the New York State All-State Orchestra. Since then, Dave has shifted his focus toward jazz. He also plays electric bass. He has played in several jazz quartets, PIT orchestras for musical productions, and jazz/funk groups over the years. Together they create a stimulating atmosphere that only live jazz music can bring.
