“How’s this for a concept? Fuse ‘50s and early ‘60s doo-wop and girl-group harmonies with stripped down ’70s-era punk. Well, that’s not a concept, that’s the highly accurate self-description of The Late Fees, and it works wonderfully. I only wish the great majority of the clever tunes from this debut disc weren’t obscenity-laced so that I could broadcast more of their music.” —Charlie Martin, KOOP Radio, Austin, TX
The Late Fees are more of a street gang than just a band. If, instead of becoming a mad hermit and gun nut, Phil Spector continued making great records, he just might have cooked up something like The Late Fees.
Fusing doo-wop and girl-group harmonies with stripped-down 70s-era punk, The Late Fees offer up short, hooky songs about first erections, car crashes, prescription drug use, and—their favorite topic—rock and roll itself.
Led by songwriters and guitarists/vocalists Zimmy T. and Fingers McKnuckles, The Late Fees began as a side project for two former folkies who became fed up with the coffee-house scene. Soon, the band took over all attention, and the acoustic guitars were packed away. The Fees also include the thunderous rhythm section of Hunt Stillborn III on bass/vocals and Wylie Peyote on drums, but their secret weapon is the good-girl-gone-bad vocals of Lefty Grooves. She has been joined in the girl-group choir by Moxie Sillen & Pammycakes, and currently throws down with her homegirls Elzie Sweetcheeks & Probable Cause Roz.
Separately, all of the Fees have made names for themselves in the music scene of their Austin, TX home base. Together, they form one giant, throbbing, musical id that both confounds and delights.
Their self-titled debut record was produced by Phil Sphinctor (Knuckles & Zimmy), along with the rest of the group at madhouse! records studio in Austin. Inspired by the Wall of Sound, it was mixed in “near-mono,” with only slight speaker separation. It was mastered by Jason Richards of the great Austin band, The Addictions.
The Late Fees play regularly in Austin at clubs like Beerland, Trophy’s, The Parlor, among others. Their live shows are raucous affairs and their irreverent, blue lyrics and melodies have a way of getting stuck in your head.

Thanks, Meat. So, Lloyd and me are starting work on the studio next Tuesday. I'm ready to get down with some itchy twitchy feelings in the new groove box, madhouse! studio Mach 2 (or, actually, 3 or 4, if you count all of my old apartments I made records in!)
Hey Fees, thank you so much for the wonderful, sentimental song about me!! I love it! Please tell me what Zimmy is saying at the very end, I couldn't make it out, haha!! Love you guys. And Rich, kicking you in the gonads all those years ago was sure worth this song! Love you bro!
Thank you for the add and for your support in this vital cause to increase the effort to EDUCATE our youth of the dangers of drugs and violence. Our future generation depends on the youth of today. Alcohol and Drugs are plaguing our society and we need to attack it head on where it is digging its roots; with our youth in our schools. Knowledge and Truth are the key to help them stay clean. They deserve the TRUTH about all of the drugs they will incounter. They are simply too smart to accept the old 'Just Say NO' adage. Todays teens want to KNOW for themselves, and a rebellious society we have created. They will seek the truth themselves and we must educate them with it. That's what they respect; That's what they deserve! A NEW D.A.R.E. REQUIRES A NEW APPROACH! Please help spread the word and tell your friends about D.A.R.E. Feel free to visit D.A.R.E. online at www. dare. com for more info on starting a D.A.R.E. program in your area and/or to show your support. Peace :-)
May I borrow some of YourSpace to promote MyCdRelease?
The all new, all original CRUELTY arrives Tuesday, July 29, and I'll celebrate with a show at Austin's legendary Cactus Cafe. It's free, aside from the $15 you'll certainly want to spend on the CD. Raina Rose opens at 8:30 pm, then Southpaw Jones performs in his finest suit, and nothing will ever be the same.
Oh no!! Say it ain't so!! The Late Fees are no more (for now)? I'm glad that some of you will still be making beautiful music together though. As for my favorite Fees memory, why of course it was the time that the Fools and Fees got together down in TX! Shah! Like the only time I ever saw the Fees I got to play with them! That ruled. Anyway, I'll see you guys next month! Love you Fees!
Sorry we missed your set at Trophy's on Friday. We already had a prior engagement. Thanks for the invite, though. We're looking forward to rockin' out with ya at Hole in the Wall!
