Ginga:
Ginga formed nearly six years ago in Boulder, Colorado, performing a wide variety of Brazilian styles of music. The quartet, comprised of Greg LaLiberte, Francisco Marques, Bill Kopper, and Raoul Rossiter has delved into choro, pagode, bossa nova, samba, Brazilian jazz, samba funk, and other styles. Everyone sings and everyone plays percussion. The topflight musicianship the band displays inspires people to dance, sing with the band, or sit and listen.

Radical Knitting Circle w/ Ben Hanna:
The Radical Knitting Circle has successfully dragged the river and found the remains of an old soul full of heartbreak and hammered fingernails, lost constituencies and the poetry of a hymn. On finding this fortune, they have pieced together a sound both raucous yet melodic, traditional though progressive. Drawing on the captive imagination of the 20th century American heart, RKC infuses folk-rock, jazz, and the wavering immigrant's song to create something both challenging and beautifully entertaining for the listener. Lyrical and humorous, yet always contemplative goes the narrative of their songwriting, performance and exposition.

Havilah & Ramaya
Havilah: 8:30pm - 9:30pm
Havilah plays all original songs made from love, endless highways, trainwrecks, large cow paintings and superfarmhouses. Havilah's songwriting fuses jazz and blues influences with an alternative edge. A gypsy at heart, Havilah recently returned from a year long stint in Europe where she performed in Irish pubs, flamenco bars and Italian rodeos. Upon returning to the U.S., Havilah relocated to the musical treasure trove of Austin, TX where she has become a fast fixture among a vibrant community of singer songwriters. Havilah is about to release her fourth CD "Bengalese Butterflies" which was recorded and produced in both Austin and Bellingham, WA. Stay tuned for release dates which will hopefully be around the first week of October.

Ramaya: 9:30pm - 10:30pm
An eclectic musician, in search of something much greater than himself, Ramaya Soskin has been writing and performing music since 2000. Starting first at Naropa University, he formed a trio named Specter X. While maturing as a songwriter he practiced his craft and soon started the band SLOWROSA with local songstress Cate Coslor, Tres Altman, Chris Mustaine and Jeb Bows. The band performed with acts such as Devotchka, The Fray, and The Czars at Boulder's "Fox" and "Boulder Theatre". The bands' representation; Brian Schwartz (Dinosaur Jr. and Rose Hill Drive) was a great support, but the act was unable to continue in it's present form. Visit myspace.com/SLOWROSA for more info. Ramaya's next project was entitled "A. Ballad Nightly" and included players Jack Leahy, Jeb Bows and Jess DeNicola-Mefford. After a wonderful year in Boulder with this outfit Ramaya moved east to New Hope P.A. and settled into a comfortable obscurity, until returning in 2009 to begin again... All in all, Ramaya and the bands he has been a part of have shared evenings with: Mannequin Makeout, Bluebook, Chris Pureka, Strangers Die Everyday, Max Davies and Tongue Noir, Dechen Hawk, Gregory Alan Isakov & The Frieght, Clay Rose, The Paper Stars, Punkalele, The Hot IQ's, Matson Jones, Libby Kirkpatrick, Bright Channel, Buck 65, County Road X, Shanti Groove, Porlolo, New Dialectic, Ian Cooke, Birdie Num Num, Eli Ward, and many other wonderful artists... After many incarnations without the release of a proper recording, Ramaya finally released a debut CD of new material in November of 2007. Both haunting and revealing, this album is a collection of delicate lullabyes, saucy rockers, and sultry ballads. Written and recorded in his shoebox of a home, it will surely make it's mark in many hearts. The new album: "All In Good Time", is available for purchase: Just click the link (album cover) to cdbaby.com. It can also be found as a download from the iTunes music store...

The "So, You're a Poet" Reading Series by Boulder's "beat book shop" Open poetry reading featuring emily owens, jonathan montegomery & allison langley
The "So, You're a Poet" reading series has several Kerouac events on its poetry calendar. Poets who have performed in this venerable, decades-old series include the late Allen Ginsberg, Bernadette Mayer (who will be in Boulder this summer for the Summer Writing Program), Diane di Prima, Janine Pommy Vega, Anselm Hollo, and many more. The series has always been hosted by poet and Kerouac School alumnus Tom Peters, owner of the Pearl Street landmark "beat book shop."
The series was hosted for many years by the famous Penny Lane Cafe. In the introduction to Poems from Penny Lane Anne Waldman writes "One thinks of the legendary Cabaret Voltaire in Zurich where the Dadaist movement was born, or the cafes and bars in San Francisco which spawned the Beat Literary Movement, also the cafe Metro and the Nuyorican Cafe, both in New York City's East Village."
The series currently takes place in the new Laughing Goat Coffeehouse, which has strong ties to the original Penny Lane. Amiri Baraka, Miguel Algarin, Lewis MacAdams, and other poets read there during last year's Summer Writing Program. The Laughing Goat is surely a Boulder literary institution in the making.

Paper Stars:
In the face of life's disruptive forces Tres Altman, The Paper Stars' frontman, found solace in a creative imagination. The sounds and the stories of The Paper Stars reflect these kinds of spaces – where words and music meet in that dusty first light of dawn. The Stars' album is full of these kinds of ancient books and pungent wisdom whisked from a life well travelled. The Paper Stars embody this image of the opening of the eyes and the taking-in of light. Illustrated otherwise, they are a catalog of human emotion punctuated by visions of a man taking responsibility for what is his. And in the final chapter of this band's provenance, this tale is about taking control and carving your own, authentic road.
