The Laurels are a psychedelic/shoegaze band from Sydney. Upon first taking the stage in June 2006, the Laurels juggernaut has accumulated accolades, guitar pedals and fans in approximately equal proportion.
Their resume reads like a poorly punctuated list with no contactable references..
*Winners Sydney University Band Competition 2007
*Titular track on internationally released “Turn On Your Mind” (Psilocybin Sounds) and two tracks featured on “Burn Your Fingers On The Sun” (Off The Hip) compilations.
*National airplay for their demos, including JJJ.
*Interviewed by international press
*Super awesome reviews
*Lots of friends on myspace
*Once got an email from Parlophone Records (that’s THE BEATLES’ LABEL!)
Such a sorry document has nonetheless afforded the Laurels solid employment on the stages of both Sydney and Melbourne from their very inception.
The savviest of networking has of course played an important role, (along with nice trousers), and the Laurels have been lucky enough to share the stage with the likes of You Am I, Tame Impala, Cloud Control, Richard In Your Mind, Belles Will Ring and The Holy Soul.
The Laurels have "almost" finished recording their long awaited debut release, and are not putting words into your mouth there with that 'long awaited' business, indeed, they've been waiting too...
“a classic in the making” – Chris Dunn, Psych Fanzine, London
“they have the volume, pushing their treble end into a Möbius strip of relentless white noise ... in a big room with a PA to match they might well be skull crushing” – Mess and Noise Magazine
"this is gorgeous, powerful, beautiful music. Ride on speed could very well be on stage right now" - Fasterlouder.com
"definitely helping to keep music evil..." - The Committee To Keep Music Evil
"The music of The Laurels definitely harks back to the sounds of Lennon-led Beatles, Velvet Underground when they were bed buddies with Andy Warhol and more recently, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, the Pixies and Sonic Youth." - whothehell.net
"They remind me of My Bloody Valentine, but within this forge their own path, heading more towards psychedelic territory. It’s a very compelling sound that slowly drags you in. They’re live show is very impressive and quite an experience. They’ve got screeching guitars, a dual vocalist setup and best of all, two leads that look like Craig Nicholls in different stages of his career (destruction?)" - openyoureyestomusic.com
"Instead of just riding the hazy vibe they almost attack their songs" Fasterlouder.com
"Local favourites The Laurels proved not only why they have a reputation of being one of this city’s best bands, but also that volume can almost induce vomiting as it almost did to me."" Music Feeds
"They burst into songs, shred them to bits then thank the audience for attending. They took noise to a new level on the night..." vibewire.net
