The Laurels boasts three exceptional female performers from the Scottish folk scene. Singing both traditional and self-penned songs, and with a wealth of experience behind them, the trio is set to make waves in the musical world.
Jenn Butterworth:
Vocals / Guitar
Jenn is from Whithorn in Dumfries and Galloway, and is an outstanding guitarist and vocalist.
She is one third of The Anna Massie Band, a formidable female trio performing Scottish music. The band has performed worldwide and at festivals such as Celtic Colours (Cape Breton), Celtic Connections (Glasgow) and the Cambridge Folk Festival. They also won ‘Best Folk Band' at the Scots Trad Music Awards 2006. While she spends most of her time performing with the Anna Massie Band, she has also appeared with Eddi Reader, Breabach and won a prestigious Danny Kyle Award at Celtic Connections with Skye fiddler Sarah Naylor.
Mairearad Green:
Accordion / Vocals
Originally from the Wester Ross village of Achiltibuie, Mairearad is now based as a professional musician in Glasgow. She is equally talented on the accordion, the pipes and the piano. At just 16, Mairearad was in the finals of BBC Young Scottish Traditional Musician of the Year 2001. She then went on to attend the Plockton Music School of Excellence for her final year at school, where she received tuition from PM Ian MacFadyen and former Runrig accordionist, Blair Douglas.
A keen composer, Mairearad's tunes are rapidly becoming popular session tunes and have been recorded by other bands, such as Canadian band Clan Terra and fellow accordionist Gary Innes. Among the best-known are "Maggie West's Waltz," "Dad's Landrover" and "Dram Behind the Curtain."
Mairearad can be seen regularly performing with The Anna Massie Band, and the exciting new accordion extravaganza known as Box Club. She has also toured with Scottish singer/songwriter Karine Polwart.
Mhairi Hall:
Piano
Mhairi Hall was born and brought up in Aviemore, Strathspey. She has been playing the piano since the age of five and grew up with the last of the house ceilidhs in Aviemore. She received her undergraduate degree in Gaelic Studies from the University of Aberdeen and continued on to a post-graduate programme at the University of Limerick. There, she received an MA in Irish Traditional Music Performance from the Irish World Music Centre under the guidance of renowned pianist, composer and academic Professor Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin. Mhairi has worked to create a Scottish/Gaelic style of piano playing, which blends traditional, jazz and classical influences. She has performed throughout Scotland, Ireland, England and Germany with bands such as ‘Cluanas', ‘Dannsa' and ‘Dòchas'.
Many thanks to the Rural Touring Project in Dumfries and Galloway, they awarded the grant that made our recording possible.
