January 2003 Jim Dorney & Ian Hunt meet through a mutual friend in Chorlton, Manchester. Jim was in a dance/electronica band at the time looking for a vocalist, and whilst nothing came of that, the pair decided to meet again for a jam. The result was No Holding Back, a tune the band still plays today.
Jim & Ian continued to write during 2003, the material initially being acoustic-based, but becoming hard-edged as time went by. They started sounding out their songs at a local jam night in the Iguana bar in Chorlton.
As a duo, they first performed as The Lava Beds in Iguana on October 22nd 2003. In late November, after asking in Iguana whether anyone wanted to join them on drums and bass, the pair were approached by bass player Nick Pendergast.
Recording and writing continued, with Jim programming sampled beats for demos in the absence of a real drummer. Finally, in May 2004 Paul Flood joined the band on kit. After the many weird & wonderful characters that had auditioned for the role, it was clear from the outset that Paul was the man for the job.
The band proceeded to gig around Manchester throughout 2004 & 2005. Nick Pendergast was replaced by bass player Mark E. Davies in September 2005, giving the music a more complete bass edge and providing backing vocals.
In August 2006, Jim departed from Manchester and the search for a new guitarist began. What seemed like an impossible task became a simple decision when a jam between Mark, Paul and Steve Dempsey, a guitarist from Stockport, took place late one night. Steve, having played in many bands over the last 15 years with both Paul and Mark, took to the role with ease and has added his own nuance to the Lava Beds tone whilst maintaining the fundamental sound.
The Lava Beds music is based partially on the sound of the US grunge bands of the early 90s but with a progressive British sound. It is unique and stimulating; capturing a variety of moods through a range of influences. It is refreshing yet tense, upbeat yet dark, but above all the music is absorbing and intriguing to the ear.
