The Lazy Cowgirls may be no more, but their body of work continues to inspire countless rock 'n' roll bands and anyone with an affinity for great music. Pat Todd retired the Lazy Cowgirls in 2003, and this myspace page- though not ran by Todd, but maintained with his blessings, will serve as a touchstone for all those enamored with his body of work. Pat Todd continues to make music with the same tireless passion to this day, and his new band PAT TODD & THE RANKOUTSIDERS, are more than worthy of maintaining the legacy that Todd began with the Lazy Cowgirls.

They tout themselves as "the best band you never heard of" but no less than Wayne Coyne of the Flaming Lips has called them "an American Institution."

Here is their official bio from 2003:

The Lazy Cowgirls - Three Cords and The Truth

The Lazy Cowgirls were formed in Los Angeles, California in 1983. Their music is rooted in the rock n roll of the 50s, 60s and 70s. Country, blues, early R&B, punk and folk are also major touchstones for the band. Theyve been described as Exile on Main Street era Rolling Stones meets the Ramones (with a sprinkling of Bob Dylans Blood on the Tracks). High praise, but the Cowgirls have earned it.

Writer Jud Cost (Magnet, The Bob, Bucket Full of Brains and Sundazed A&R person) has called lead singer Pat Todd one of the best half-dozen front men of all time, and Ive seen them all. Besides being a dynamic front man, Todds been the main songwriter and creative force behind the band for over 18 years. Hes filled with an energy and drive few can match. Joining Pat is Michael Leigh who might just be the greatest rock n roll guitar player in the world. Hes got style, taste and feel. Hes the perfect combination of Chuck Berry, Keith Richard, Johnny Thunders and Johnny Ramone. Hes also quite a force on stage. He has a presence full of energy and a solid flashiness. On the other side of the stage is Leonard Keringer on bass guitar. The counterpoint to guitarist Leigh, he can go from a stoic Bill Wyman stance during one song to bouncing off the walls on the next number. He seems to play bass and second guitar simultaneously. Keringer and Leigh also combine to do a great job on harmony and backing vocals, and with singer Todd, they make up the best frontline in rock n roll today. Meanwhile, drummer Roy Morgan keeps it all together. His simple style can be deceiving if you dont listen closely. His playing is powerful while doing no more than what the song needs.

In this day and age where image and attitude count for more than what they should, the Cowgirls do something most rock n roll bands are not able to do - they play songs!

In fact, the most underrated thing about the Cowgirls is how good they are musically, and how good their songs are. And what songs they are! Theyre cynical, hopeful, irreverent, tender and hard-nosed - usually all at the some time. They know lifes full of contradictions, both right in front of us and in between the lines. Timeless subject mater from a timeless band.

In 2000 The Lazy Cowgirls released two acclaimed CDs, (Somewhere Down the Line and Rank Outsider) as well as three singles. In 2001 they released the Here and Now (Live!) CD and toured the U.S. and Canada.

The band has new CD entitled Im Goin Out And Get Hurt Tonight ready to go, over 20 unrecorded songs and is planning to tour Europe, Japan and America.

Buy their records, see them live and pay attention. Dont cheat yourself out of a small shot of wonder. Give and ye shall receive. They wont let you downI promise you.

B.J. Johnson

Im Goin Out To Get Hurt Tonight is the latest Lazy Cowgirls release; a return to their 20-year old punk roots with just enough Hank Williams to mesh with the rock, making it a truly quintessential release. From the slowed down version of Goddamn Bottle to the amped up Burnin Daylight, Are You Ready? and Youre The Thing, the disc proves that the Cowgirls are just as relevant today - timeless masters, The Lazy Cowgirls. -Todd Smith, The Cutting Edge www.thecuttingedge.com

LAZY COWGIRLS

Friday 3/19, Subterranean

Lots of journeymen musicians have moved through the Lazy Cowgirls since the band formed two decades ago, but singer Pat Todd has always been in command. The Indiana native, who writes the Cowgirls tunes, is a true believer in the redemptive power of rock n roll; despite the shuffling membership and a level of obscurity that might cause even the most committed rocker to throw in the towel, he continues to sing with the same go-for-broke gusto that convinced the Cowgirls earliest lineup that they should move to LA and make it big in the biz. They were never able to unclog that pipe dream, but you wouldnt know it from the slate of classic recordings theyve made over the years, and their latest, Im Goin Out and Get Hurt Tonight (Reservation), is no exception. While on its own the quartets twangy amalgam of Stones, Stooges, and Ramones has always gotten the job done, its Todds full-throated, soulful growl that makes this act special. The albums got the usual passel of hard-charging rockers, fueled by artlessly executed Chuck Berry and Keith Richards riffs, but it also continues a recent move toward more acoustic, countrified material like the ballad Suicide Note, which, despite its dark theme, hints at a drive for survival: What I dont know is all I got, Todd sings. -Peter Margasak Chicago Reader www.chicagoreader.com

THE LAZY COWGIRLS Im Goin Out to Get Hurt Tonight - Reservation

The Lazy Cowgirls have been preaching the alcohol-soaked broken heart blues since 1983, watching the world change, evolve, and finally catch up with them. The entire spirits of the yearly Hootenanny festivals are what the Cowgirls have been bottling and selling out of the back of their trucks all these years. In 2003 the Cowgirls are concocting classics that will speak to the greaserpunks and to the Hank Williams fans alike. Put Exile On Mainstreet on one stereo, then put on Los Angeles on the boombox you couldnt sell at a swap meet, and youd find yourself in Cowgirl country. What comes with age? Wisdom. And mortality, faith, defeat, love, disappointment and more: this the currency of a band knocking back a few in honor of 20 years of running with the devil. If you can appreciate Billy Zoom and Dave Alvin, youll be suitably impressed with Michael Leighs guitar acumen. The ghostly Suicide Note features some blue picking to make you weep. Goddamn Bottle is a recreation of a former Cowgirls classic full of home truths like I got a goddamn bottle, and I aint got a lot, you know life, it aint so hard. This band never lost their way. They never gave up and theyve stayed true to their earliest records. What more can you ask? Theyre the sort of band that would be hailed as living legends in a place like Austin that constantly sees country and rock blending without any fences keeping the randier forces out. -Paul Leeds, Culture Bunker Review

It blows my mind that the Lazy Cowgirls, with over a decade under their belts, arent huge by now. With a slew of rockin releases, the uncompromised sweat and toil they put into their live shows, and their excess of true-to-the-core Rock and Roll spirit, they blow away the best of them. -Beth Ramona Allen, Bay Guardian

Hi Hi...

Hope you're luving this last little bit of summer. Have you been out to The Airliner yet? We've been playing there lately & are really digging that punky East Side vibe. We've got a show there again on the 8th & really want you to come out to see what we do live. Music is always better in person. Rock & Roll!

Peace...
