Influences
In no particular order: The Black Crowes, The Band, ZZ Top, Delbert McClinton, Dr. John, Jerry Lee Lewis, Fats Domino, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Kentucky Headhunters, Harry Connick Jr., The Funky Meters, Gov't Mule, Eric Johnson, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble, Little Feat, Neville Brothers, lots of music that came out of Muscle Shoals, AL, The Doors, Ray Charles, Allen Touissant, Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, G.G. Shinn, Kenny Bill Stinson, Monty Russell, General Patterson, James Brown, etc.
The Levees are one of the most dynamic bands on the music scene today. Their intense live show recently helped the group break the online attendance record on the Muscle Shoals to Music Row live radio/internet show…a feat accomplished strictly by word-of-mouth. Standing ovations are common after a blistering set from the band. Some fans have a hard time describing just what type of music they play but the band’s concept is really quite simple.
After backing many of country music’s finest, these Louisiana natives felt the need to express love for their home state. The focus would be to write and perform songs that vividly depict people, life, and situations throughout the state of Louisiana without being regionally specific. Their first self-produced CD includes songs that describe the life of a New Orleans street performer in “Electric Shoes”, a special appearance of a Lincoln Parish sheriff in “Blood River”, and the true story of a man, “Joe Wilson”, who spent his entire life sawing pine trees in northwest Louisiana. These stories float atop a totally unique, swampy sound which includes arrangements combining the use of the trombone with slide guitar.
The Levees are currently working with Grammy award-winning producer Steve Fishell at the renowned Sound Emporium studios. Their song “Blood River” was recently chosen to be featured in the movie “Animals”.
The Levees are Adam Jones (lead vocals/trombone), Dan Cohen (guitar/vocals), Derek Mixon (drums), and James Cook (bass/vocals).
“(The Levees) smashed the quiet smoky vibe with their rumbling Louisiana swamp rock”. – Nashville Scene
“These Levees ain’t holding nothing back!” – Kenny Bill Stinson (host KEDM Blue Monday)
“The hottest thing to come out of Louisiana since Tabasco” – Monty Russell (host The Roadhouse Show Z-107.5)
“The Levees take the stage with the fervor of a swamp preacher, leaving a little Louisiana wherever they play. Hands up...they're the best!” – Greg Barnhill (Grammy nominated songwriter)
“Sometimes a band finishes a song and there's a moment of vacuum-silence, and then a thunder-clapping of applause. This is a sign that the audience has been paying profound attention, and it's what happens when you're listening to The Levees. It's also a sign that you're really enjoying yourself and the music. The next thing you know you're dancing!” - Biff Watson (Trifectone Music Group)
