About me:
The Literary Review has been publishing fiction, poetry, essays and translations for over half a century. We believe in literature as art. We believe that everyone is international. We believe in the slush pile. We believe that print is not dead, and that e-books are books too. The Winter 2009 issue, Africa Calling, presents over 25 new writers who we hope you've never read but that you will love. This issue is especially wonderful because of its guest editor, Jeffery Renard Allen. (Please read and buy his mindblowing new book "Holding Pattern.") This spring we will feature the theme of Manifest Destiny, with poetry, politics, expansionism, fiction, fatalism, essays and optimism. Stay tuned. This summer is our Invisible Cities issue. This fall, Therapy! (everyone wants to be in that issue). Then, Machismo: A Field Guide, and in the not too distant future other thrilling themes: Refrigerator Mothers, Emo, How To Read Music and more. You are welcome to visit our website: http://www.theliteraryreview.org/ We are affiliated with the MFA program at Fairleigh Dickinson University: http://mfa.fdu.edu/

“If I had my life to live over, I would start barefoot earlier in the spring and stay that way later in the fall. I would go to more dances. I would ride more merry-go-rounds. I would pick more daisies.” -- Nadine Stair

Rely on principles; walk erect and free, not trusting to bulk of body, like a wrestler, for one should not be unconquerable in the sense that an ass is. Who then is unconquerable? He whom the inevitable cannot overcome.-- EPICTETUS

Some people have nightmares about showing up to work naked.

Other people live them.

Servicing the Pole is the portrait of a New York stripper in the 1990’s – a battle-worn misfit slogging her way through the city’s roughest clubs, watching as the job replaces her personal life, and secretly harbouring rock star ambitions.

As the fast-paced night life’s deceptive promises of easy money gradually give way to the harsher realities of addiction and prostitution, Emily must decide – is this really the person she wants to be? And if so, at what price?

Servicing the Pole

Available on www. laurishaw. com on Sept.

“Regard your good name as the richest jewel you can possibly be possessed of - for credit is like fire; when once you have kindled it you may easily preserve it, but if you once extinguish it, you will find it an arduous task to rekindle it again. The way to gain a good reputation is to endeavor to be what you desire to appear.” -- Socrates

In celebration of Bloomsday today, June 16th, check out “Potato I Have” at ELIMAE. It’s a derived text that tracks Joyce’s use of the potato - a talisman for Bloom - in Ulysses.

And, if you’re in the mood for more Joycean derivations, check out “Gate. Safe!” at Admit Two, which tracks the theme of safety and recurring gates imagery throughout Joyce's Ulysses The moment in the book that inspired me occurs in the eighth episode, Lestrygonians: “Gate.
Safe!”
