...Now the boys are proving they're all grown up with their newest (and strongest) release yet. On their second full-length, We Sing the Body Electric!, they've dropped all the conceptual crap and started to rock—while still showcasing Van Deusen's fantastic voice, of course.
...The Lonely Forest possesses a remarkably sophisticated songwriting acumen and a knack for delivering interesting, winning melodies mainly via piano, bass, and drums. In their lusher moments, the band—led by John Van Deusen and his passionate vocals—combines the pop majesty of the Long Winters with the quirkiness of XTC, but when Van Deusen busts out his guitar, the thrust becomes punkish. They're absolutely poised to be one of Seattle's next breakout acts.

We Sing in Time is where the stars align for The Lonely Forest. The band rides a catchy chorus to epic heights, all while hitting a sincere, emotional note. By the end of the song, it becomes clear that the song's refrain of 'in time the trees die and lights will fade' isn't about the seasons. 'Let's send boys overseas/To fight ghosts in the deserts/Instead of teaching them to give and lead' the band cries in the chilling closing verse, lending an anguished charge to the already compelling track and a highlight to a thoroughly compelling album.
I guess I should have signed you that night at Jules Maes a couple years ago when I had the chance!
Be wise in your signings. Obviously you know all the horror stories.
Anyways, would love to play another show with you again if you interest. We are trying to heading to the EU/UK in July & Aug, but we should be in the states until then.
