Influences
Wilco, Ryan Adams, Grandaddy, Mercury Rev, Gene Clark, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Bright Eyes, The Velvet Underground, Tom Petty, Jackson Browne, David Crosby,Bonnie Prince Billy, Tom McRae, Elliott Smith, Jerry Garcia, Nick Drake, The Jayhawks, James Taylor, The Band, Willie Nelson, Tom Waits, Keith and Ronnie, Gram Parsons.
"The Long Goodbye is led by singer songwriter Alfie Bernardi, a talented multi instrumentalist who quotes Neil Young, Ryan Adams and Wilco as the band's main influences. His lyrics have been described as "haunting, introspective, and painfully real" and his voice as "unique, passionate and impossibly filled with emotion". After a successful career as a sideman in several bands, and sharing stages with the likes of Nick Cave, Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros, Chaka Khan and Paul Young, Alfie started working on what started as a solo album and slowly evolved into The Long Goodbye sound, aided by guitarist Jake MacKay, and many other partners in crime. "Whenever in ruins" has been hailed by many as "the album to play when the whisky comes out" and "a fine collection of heartfelt songs, and the most evocative voice since Counting Crows' Adam Duritz". Spending most of their time in a stable-turned-recording studio in the Sussex countryside, The Long Goodbye are currently recording a new album that further demonstrates their versatility and free-thinking style, and are building up a cult following performing in many of the south coast leading venues, especially after reaching 8 in the Latest7 download charts and being a "Download of the week" for The Argus, both Brighton publications. Together they craft reflective songs about lost love, hope, desolation and restlessness and take their all-night heartbreaks to the masses."
"I really like this track (For a long time) because it is doing stuff in a very different way, which, when you listen to a lot of music in a very concentrated fashion, makes for a refreshing change." PHIL JACKSON, BBC SOUTHERN COUNTIES RADIO.
"All of their songs are self written and are of a consistently high standard. They are gifted musicians, with a style close to 1970's era country rock but with a modern edge. A band to keep an eye on!" MIKE MORRISON, MAVERICK MAGAZINE.
"The Long Goodbye produce a set which changes pace with regularity, yet bristles with quality. A band well worth watching." EAST MAGAZINE.
"A breath of fresh air...a band to warm the soul." CLAIRE LLOYD, KONG PROMOTIONS BRIGHTON.
"I really liked it. There is a fusion of very different things in there. I like the relaxed approach and it's kind of perfect for a rainy day." PAUL MEX, MEX ONE RECORDINGS. (Robert Wyatt, Wham etc.).
"The Long Goodbye, a cathartic dose of Ameri-rock post Wilco and Neil Young, were a welcome relief!" THE LATEST7 MAGAZINE
