Kind Words for The Loom

RCRD LBL REVIEW
"With Brooklyn churning out bands of all stripes at all times, it's becoming more and more difficult to tell them all apart, let alone corral one whose music might send your heart aflutter. But wait! Hearts are FLUTTERING. Working heavily in gothic watercolors, the Loom kick out glow-in-the-dark folk wailers that flirt with the anthemic, but never abandon the quiet spaces they were born in. It's a balancing act exemplified most bodaciously by both tracks we're proudly sharing today, the excellent "Song For The Winter Sun" and the exclusive "Of Vegas And Vanity." Wait for the brainlight to shine full blast at just about the one minute mark on the latter. So bright." - David Bevan

Sounds Like: Smog, Sufjan Stevens, The Arcade Fire, Fairport Convention

THE BOSTON GLOBE
"The Loom, which just released its debut EP, "At Last Light," a collection of quietly beautiful tracks, wheels its alt-country wagon through town tonight in between stops at the Pop Montreal and CMJ festivals. "I guess it's safe to say people can expect equal parts foot stomps and distorted electric guitar," says Fanning, "all bolstered by our intense camaraderie and joy for making music." Which is convenient since we have a joy for listening to it.

THE LOOM'S DEBUT BRINGS DUSK TO THE CITY THAT NEVER SLEEPS
"Picture yourself cuddled in front of a warm fire, hot toddy in hand, as the snow plunks gently in a white blanket around your log cabin. Not so easy if you’re from break-out quintet the Loom’s home borough of Brooklyn, but the soft, transcendental melodies of the group’s debut EP At Last Light might help spark your imagination if you close your eyes tight enough. The new album floats quietly on vocal male-female cross-pollination, soothing French horns, cautious banjos, and an array of folk-rock paraphernalia.

The album’s final track, “Song for the Winter Sun,” is a haunting, nostalgic call-to-action, riding on the back of a single ukulele’s strum." - Pensatos

HOOVES ON THE TURF - THE LOOM SINGS AT THE SECRET GARDEN
"Though The Loom hasn’t been around for too long, singer John Fanning says the current line-up feels permanent, and I very much agree. He and drummer Jon Alvarez share a great chemistry from being friends before becoming band mates, and after playing with the band for about 10 months, classically-trained french horn and trumpet player Lis Rubard is happy to focus on it as her main project. Joining them most recently are flutist Bethany Chase (who quit oboe school after literally telling them to “fuck off”) and guitarist Mark Rogers (who seems to treat everything he says and does with a dose of passion). Both musicians are an excellent fit, musically and temperamentally. And though the beloved bassist Dan DeSloover is temporarily away on a biological project that involves stunning fish in order to count them, he was greatly missed as The Loom and friends of The Loom gathered at John’s apartment in Kensington for the shooting of these videos. China, who you will see playing the saw, made an exuberant amount of delicious food for all.

More on The Loom and one more video (my favorite of the two) after the jump.

The song in the first video, “Song for the Winter Sun”, is taken from the band’s self-titled EP, and the second, “In the Wings”, from a collection of new songs that are ready to be recorded for a full-length album. With the addition of Bethany and Mark, says John, the sound of that recording is sure to differ slightly from the EP’s. See the current line-up when The Loom plays four NYC dates before heading for Pop Montreal in October. Filling in for Dan while he’s away is Toby, who also plays additional drums in these videos." - Hooves on the Turf

NYCTAPER
"To say that The Loom’s performance was a revelation would be to understate the significance of this unit. They combine musical talent, strong writing, and an abundant amount of band camaraderie into an intense amalgam of folk, americana, bluegrass and alt-country. The Loom are releasing their debut EP in the next month...we hope that the final product captures the spirit we experienced on Sunday." - NYCTAPER

THE DELI MAGAZINE
"The Loom is a new emerging NYC act that plays a sort of bucolic folk with many country elements that somehow doesn't sound like country. This is mostly due to a taste for melodies that shies away from the traditional standards in favor of a more modern and sophisticated approach to songwriting." - The Deli Magazine
