THE LOVING CUP
have developed their own brand of rockin country and blues Americana, drawing together influences such as Gram Parsons, Ry Cooder and The Band.
Very much a live act, The Loving Cup's sound was described by Mike Davidson of Gigwise at a recent Liverpool Barfly gig as "a warm and soulful set of country-influenced rock n roll that has The Rolling Stones classic Exile on Main St as its overwhelming reference point. The Loving Cup possess a mean songwriting ability for creating driving anthems that positively beg to be blaring out from a soft top Chevy cruising Route 66".
In 2003 The Loving Cup released their eponymously-titled debut album on the Blue Rhythm label. Americana-UK said the album "makes all the right noises with high production values, a classic sound and, hey, a really nice cover". Kool Kat Muzik in New Jersey summarised the album as "Terrific hook-filled alt-country sounds from this brilliant new UK group with a vocalist who, at times sounds like Steve Marriot (think Humble Pies country-tinged stuff). Also has a Faces-like swagger throughout."
In 2005, as The Loving Cup prepared to release their debut single - a double A-side of previously unreleased material their record label Blue Rhythm folded and so the proposed single release never went ahead. One of the tracks however - ’Candyman’, received considerable television exposure as music for a Morrisons national advertising campaign.
The Loving Cup’s reputation as a “good-time” rock’n’roll band has been forged over recent years by performances across the UK on the Americana circuit and as regulars at the internationally recognised and respected Burnley Blues Festivals and The Great British Rhythm and Blues festivals. This has been complemented by live sets on BBC Radio Lancashire's Blue Notes programme and sessions for BBC Radio Wales.
Now The Loving Cup have finished recording their second album - "Goofer Dust". The band has been talking to record companies about a release sometime in the Summer of 2008. There will be promotional copies available ahead of that.
BBC Radio Wales DJ and Daily Post newspaper columnist Adam Walton likened the formation of The Loving Cup to a Dr. Frankenstein fantasy in which the mad scientist is reading his recipe:
"Keith Richards’ brain’ – he won’t miss it. ‘Gram Parsons’ Country Lilt’, ‘The Swagger of Jagger’, ‘The Fingers from John Squire’s Left-Hand (currently unused)’, ‘The Allman Brothers’ Bottleneck’, Levon Helm’s Sense of Rhythm.’"
"Flippin’ heck! This nutter’s trying to bioengineer a supergroup!!!!"
I can barely contain my excitement and joy at the prospect of relaying unto thee, the most gracious and discerning listening public, news of the delectable entertainments gracing the upper chamber of Fuel Cafe, Withington this fine Saturday, July 12th. For show and tell this week, we present:
- Kr!ss Foster - Utterly fantastic absurdist, surrealist and occasionally nauseating songs about Vimto, Dale Winton and necrophelia. You'll laugh, you'll cry, he'll change your life.
- Danny Chivers - Award winning eco-geek slam poet all the way from Oxford. Half master of witty banter, half eerily reasonable prophet of environmental armageddon
James Knight - A sort of poet from Blackpool pitting high quality hip hop rhythms and rhymes against an unnerving backdrop of male insecurity.
Hosted once again by Al Baker, and once again featuring 'Magic' Mark Haworth performing close up magic between the acts. Doors at 8:00pm, £3 recommended donation for the travelling acts.
This month we have Regina Spektor with the theme to the film Prince Caspian (but don’t let that put you off, it is really rather wonderful), Mermaid Skeletons with a great song that’s worth it for the chorus alone, the Agnostic Mountain Gospel Choir, who are as good as their name if not more so and finally the legendary Chip Taylor with the thought-provoking Former American Soldier. Great listening, and if you like the tracks, buy the albums!
Thank you very much for letting me join your circle of friends. I hope to see you out on the road real soon. Keep the blues alive and keep on keeping the faith! Peace and Love! Shirley King, Daughter of The Blues
