low flying owls originally formed in sacramento and have since relocated to los angeles. the critically-embraced “take the scenic route” album, 2002, marked the band's first full-length release, followed by a self-titled EP, both issued through the americans are coming records. soon after in 2003, singles label isota records put out a 7” special limited edition single featuring the low flying owls track "georgie shot johnnie”, taken from their first album for stinky records, “elixir vitae." the album showcases frontman jared southard’s lyrical penchant for approaching morbid subject matter with an ironic, satirical twist -- which southard describes as a sort of “dark happiness.” the band manages to blend this approach with a musical mélange of explosive guitar-driven rock, british-influenced pop and swirling psychedelic grooves.
across the pond, legendary UK DJ Steve Lamacq spun their record on his influential BBC1 program. elixir vitae also garnered significant college radio play throughout the u.s.
low flying owls had toured extensively throughout 2004 with luminaries the fall and clinic and have graciously shared the stage with blonde redhead, brmc, dandy warhols, brian jonestown massacre, gram rabbit, the warlocks, and jonathan richmond of the modern lovers to name a few.
after two years of road ware, personal differences, and a failed studio venture, low flying owls decided to call it a day in 2005. the lost lfo album was deemed "not commercial enough" and therefor never saw the light. during this hiatus, jared and andy moved to los angeles and experimented with musical endeavors strangers smile and weird dreams. mike bruce shot, edited, and acted in the legend of gods gun. he's also shot music videos for the dandy warhols, spindrift, and gram rabbit. the talented sam coe has been busy with revolving musical projects, namely the band two sheds out of sacramento.
fast forward now to 2009. the band is back together and better than ever. low flying owls are finishing up a new record at the illustrious sunset sound with a spring 2009 release date. robbie dean has taken over the drumming duties. hailing from the band call me ishmael, robbie dean's drumming style in not unlike keith moon or the late great john bonham. he's an excellent addition to the lfo lineup. mike and jared are currently working on a screenplay together and prepping a video shoot for the new track, "ghost by the sea."
2009 should be so fine.
