A while ago Simon called Robin and said "I want to learn how to play the organ". Robin said "Don't you already own a couple of them and a Leslie cab?" Simon confirmed that this was indeed the case and that although he had sold some of said equipment in the great "shit the bed, I'm going to be a Dad sale of 2004" he'd never actually played keys more than to put down a four note bass line and some aaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh aaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhh pads on one or two of those rave records he'd made after that band he was in ages ago.
He added that the bass player of one of his more recent punk rock combo's "Southport" was actually the renowned musician/producer/mass demo expert Nick Philpin and that he and said "geeza", as I think he's referred to in North London, had spoken about him playing more guitar again and playing a quieter more sophisticated vibe that they’d like to explore together.
Robin said that he had recently found out that the band he was playing in, that neither of them could remember the name of, was about to be no more. He said he was bored and wanted to do something else, and that his trusted wing man Tim Macdonald was also looking for a new distraction to creatively engross himself.
So they ended the conversation with much excitement, agreed to call the other prospective parties and call back ASAP. Simon called back a number of hours later, shortly followed by said geeza to confirm that plans should be made. Robin was impressed but could neither confirm, nor deny Mr. Macdonald’s intentions as he was currently away on a golfing/UNICEF trip to Baghdad with Stuart Copeland, Larry Mullen Jnr and Bill Clinton.
It was some time until any of the eager musicians heard back from the drummer in question. Then, 30 sleeps later they all got a telegram to their humble abodes that simply read. “AGREED…CONDITIONS TO FOLLOW…JOE MAPLES…ACOUSTIC/MELODICA/FANFARES…BAND…THE MACCALITES…CHATEAU MAC…0500 SAT….DONT BE LATE…OVER.
And with that THE MACCALITES were born.
