The name 'madrigal' has been given to two types of music. Both Originated in
Italy. The first was current in the 14th century. The second, which you will
hear on this CD, appeared two centuries later. The songs are composed for three
to five vocal parts and are performed unaccompanied. The subject-matter of the
madrigals recorded here is secular and the most common topic is love.
