We all came from different musical backgrounds- jazz, folk, hip-hop, african, reggae- so they all influenced the music without us really trying.
One of the roots of the band was Ed, Keith and Caspar doing music work with young people, making performances about the state of the world using percussion, rap, video,dance, theatre (check out movingsounds.org). We needed to keep learning too, so we kept on practicing our instruments and the grooves, the tunes, the lyrics, the band just took on a life of its own. In the spirit of Keeping it Real we grew a lot of the songs busking on the streets, taking music to kids, elders ,nutters, mums, dads, and people having a normal day at work.
From being teachers, promoters, wanderers, londoners, gardeners, sailors, buddhists, lovers, friends, daddies, buskers we followed the scent of an infectious groove that brought us together as the Manjinga 7 and is taking us on a journey, hopefully to you!
