THE MANN CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS

About the Mann Center for the Performing Arts

The Mann Center for the Performing Arts was founded in 1935 under the name Robin Hood Dell Concerts, as the summer venue for the Philadelphia Orchestra. The Center moved to its present outdoor facility in 1976, and subsequently was designated the Mann Music Center. The Center was renamed The Mann Center for the Performing Arts in the Spring of 1997.

The Mann has always focused on bringing world-class artists and touring companies to the community. The Philadelphia-owned facility located in Fairmont Park consists of covered seating for nearly 5,000, outdoor seating for another 4,500 and a 4,000-person capacity lawn, open for general admission, all against the backdrop of the Philadelphia skyline.

The Music

In addition to the traditional summer of Philadelphia Orchestra concerts, the Mann season is rapidly expanding to include more than just orchestral and popular concert series. New programming has continued to bring contemporary artists to the stage and to expand the Mann performances across genres.

Landmark performances at the Mann include the Philadelphia premiers of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, the Kirov Ballet, CATS, The Metropolitan Opera, Riverdance, American Ballet Theatre with featured artist Mikhail Baryshnikov, Sarah Brightman, the North American conducting debut of Zubin Mehta, the international debut of violin prodigy, Midori, world renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma, and the Bolshoi Ballet and Orchestra’s production of Spartacus.

New contemporary artists to grace the Mann stage have included Elvis Costello, R.E.M., James Taylor, Bonnie Raitt, Alison Krauss and Union Station, Michael McDonald, Boz Scaggs, John Legend, Norah Jones, George Benson and many others.

Changes at the Mann

In the Summer of 2007, The Mann took the initiative to make its patrons concert experiences more memorable by updating and improving the venue. Guests are now greeted by new entry gates, the Coventry Box Office and Welcome Center, as well as the new PECO Plaza, Independence Pavilion with Donor Terrace and Garden, and a new Education & Outreach Center. The Mann has taken other measures to make the concert experience safe and comfortable for all guests through improvements to concessions, restrooms, a terraced hillside, new roadways, and reconfigured intersections.

Giving Back

The Mann has reaffirmed its commitment to its Access the Arts program and initiated new educational and outreach programs designed to serve the community. Today, 50,000 complimentary admissions are made available through 350 local community service and charitable organizations. The Young People’s Concert Series consists of five major productions designed to educate and inspire young audiences. In 2006, nearly 35,000 children attended a wide variety of music, song and dance performances that celebrated diverse countries and cultures from around the world. The Mann is the only major summer entertainment venue in the country with public access outreach programs of this magnitude which are also free to everyone.

Join Us

Now in the 75th anniversary season since the Robin Hood Dell Concerts, The Mann presents a comprehensive schedule of performances consisting of Philadelphia Orchestra concerts and a wide variety of contemporary artists, as well as educational programs designed inspire community through the performing arts.

At the Mann, you’ll find our performances diverse enough for any musical taste. This summer join us for music-filled evenings under the stars and experience performances that you will never forget.
