Go to mapquest and open a map of Illinois. Place your finger on Chicago. Go straight South of Chicago. Keep going, just a little further. Whoa! Go back. Back to I-74. Ok, now go East. See Danville? Right there! That is where Mark and Curt met in the Winter of 1996 while attending a Community College and playing in different punk bands. After they both moved away to attend different colleges they would get together on free weekends and Holidays to record songs on Curt's 4-track (Pay attention here, the 4-track is important). They were mostly silly songs with Mark playing guitar and singing and Curt on Drums. Nothing much was ever done with the songs. Ok, now go back to mapquest, open a map of the entire US. Place your finger on Danville and trace it East, all the way to Boston. Are you there? It's pretty easy to find. That's where Laura and Alison met while attending an art school in Downtown Boston. They were pretty much the only girls in the entire dorm that played guitar. They would mess around in their dorm rooms and write songs inspired by surf rock. Nothing ever came of this project named See Pritty. Soon after graduating from college in 2000, Curt moved to Chicago and sold his drum set, Mark was living in St. Louis, Laura and Alison had spent some time in London and now were back in Boston. After living in Chicago for 2 years and not finding much of anything interesting, Curt met Laura (2003), soon after she had moved to Chicago, outside the Metro at a Built To Spill show. Strange how these things happen? A few months later Curt gave Laura his old 4-track for her birthday, not sure what to expect, a few weeks later Curt was shocked when he found that Laura had written and recorded three original songs (Bear Song and City Country were two of them). Completely blown away and with the encouragement from his friends he ran out and bought a new drum kit. Curt and Laura practiced in friends basements and attics when they could. With no real agenda at hand they continued to work on bits and pieces of songs, just for fun. In the spring of 2004 Alison moved to Chicago from her home in New Hampshire and moved in with Laura. This move would prove to be fateful as they would jam in their living room on a nightly basis. What transpired were early version of That Song and City Country. Soon Alison, Curt and Laura started practicing at an hourly practice space, it was a rough start at first since no one had been in a band in years, but it was a lot of fun and that's what counts. Soon after their initial practices they found their original bass player and began to take things more seriously. They recorded 4 a song demo with their friend Devin Davis in November of 2004, played their first show at Phyllis's Musical Inn in March of 2005 and recorded another 6 song demo with Barry Phipps (Cocktails, The Like Young, Archer Prewitt) in August, 2005. On the very last day of 2004 Mark moved to Chicago for work. His apartment was only 2 blocks away from Curt's. They would hang out, drink coffee and talk about music a few times a week. Also, they began to play together at the band's new practice space. After the original bass player for The Manners quit in Oct. of 2005, Mark joined the band the week of their biggest show (Mates Of State at the Abbey Pub) and learned all the songs in one day! The Manners have played at Chicago venues like: The Double Door, Schubas, The Abbey Pub, Beat Kitchen, Elbo Room, Silvies and Phyllis's Musical Inn.
