The Matavaras are a rock/folk band from Halifax, Nova Scotia, and Toronto, Ontario. They were recently described by American college music magazine ’Hear/Say,’ as the ’perfect summer band.’ The same review also referenced their throwback sound as similar to ‘Nick Drake, just louder.’
Their musical influences draw from a very eclectic palate including The Clash, The Seeds, Simon and Garfunkel, The Band, and Big Star. A live show offers everything from upbeat garage-tinged rockers to finger picking 60’s style Greenwich Village folk.
Their self-titled EP (2007) has charted on Canadian college radio and has been extensively played on the CBC. The Matavaras were also among selected artists to have a song featured on the hit ABC Family/Global TV series, 'Falcon Beach.'
In the recent past they have shared the stage as openers for Jesse Malin and Matt Mays and El Torpedo, as well as having been invited to play such festivals as the Los Angeles based International Pop Overthrow Festival and the North By Northeast Festival.
That was a great set at The Horseshoe. Capturing the crash-and-burn spirit of catchy-rock, hook-filled melodies, and an energy-fueled attitude. A band that gives a nod to the UK trad-rock, from Cast to The Bluetones, this is music that makes you glad to be alive.
That was a great set at The Horseshoe. A blissful cocaphony of soaring indie-rock, giving a nod to the East Coast and Brit-inflected pop. Ringing-riffs, commanding vocals, and an inspiring, energetic, hook-filled sound that will leave you humming all the way home.
Thomas, I met your mother at the bus station in Peterborough the weekend she was visiting you in Toronto. I talked to her for a good 45 minutes. She is the sweetest girl ever. She recommended your music, and talked very highly of you. It is unreal how much I learned about you, and your family! Haha. But your mom is an angel.
