About me:

** This profile has been created and updated by friends of Matthew Shepard and the Matthew Shepard Foundation. This Memorial is not affiliated with any local or national organizations, but run by a supporter of Equality and fair rights **

This profile is in memory of Matthew Shepard, who was murdered by two men for no true reason. Here is his story:

Matthew Shepard was born on December 1, 1976. He grew up in a small town called Casper, Wyoming. He attended Crest Hill Elementary School, Dean Morgan Junior High, and the first two years of high school at Natrona County High School, and was also a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church. He spent my junior and senior years of high school at The American School in Switzerland and graduated in 1995. He later attended Catawba College and Casper College before moving to Denver. Later, he became a first-year political science major at the University of Wyoming in Laramie. His parents lived in Dhahran, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia where his father worked for the Aramco oil company. Unfortunately, his blood was tested and was discovered that to be HIV-positive.

Shortly after midnight on October 7, 1998, Matthew met Aaron McKinney and Russell Henderson at a bar in Laramie, Wyoming. When he asked for a ride home, he tied to a fence, robbed, severely beaten, left to die by the two men. His body was discovered by a bicyclist 18 hours later, still alive but unconscious. The only sign of life was two spots on his bloody face where he had been crying.

Matthew suffered a fracture from the back of his head to the front of his right ear. Ha also had severe brain stem damage, which affected his body's ability to regulate heart rate, body temperature and other vitals. There were also about a dozen small lacerations around his head, face and neck. The injuries were deemed too severe for doctors to operate. He never regained consciousness and remained on full life support. Tragically, he was pronounced dead at 12:53 a.m. on October 12 at Poudre Valley Hospital in Fort Collins, Colorado.

This Memorial serves as a place for people to mourn and remember Matthew's life and death, and a place for open conversation about anti-gay hate crimes to occur.

I truly love Matthew even though I never met him. I found out about him ten years after his life ended and It was through him that I figured out what I wanted to do with my life. He makes me want to go out and help other people non-stop. I'm really into civil rights and making people fit in no matter their differences. Matthew did that for me. He is one of my hero's and someone who I will always remember and think highly of. Matthew you are so missed but just know that you are making a difference in the world even 10 years after you left it. Your beautiful and please rest in peace

Thank-you for adding me to this page. This is something I believe in. I also am on the other memorial page, not sure which one is run by whom, so which ever page I post to, the same is true for both or any other page that exists. Forever in my thoughts and prayers and forever in the endeavor of fighting for the basic Human Rights, equality and acceptance of all. Ignorance breeds fear, fear breeds hate. Hate is evil and violence. So the message of "No H8" is also something I believe in.

Those with negative attitudes can't see past the horizons but those with positive attitudes continue to fight, believing in the possibilities life holds. I believe that our outlook in life determines just how far we will get. We always have a choice in life whether we want to just give up or if we want to keep fighting. No one ever said life would be easy; it does have its share of hard times.
But those hard times help make us stronger and prepare us for the life waiting ahead. In order though to discover what lies beyond the horizon, we must continue to believe in ourselves and not back down even when we face the storms in life. Because if we make excuses as to why life won't ever get better for us and for why we can't heal or how surviving is just too tough, then we will never know where our lives can take us or how much better things can be since we've all ready admitted defeat in our minds. It's like the saying goes,

"Tough times don't last, but tough people do!"

We are tough and we can make it through anything since we've all ready been through hell and back in our own lives.
