WHO are The Meanie Geanies? The Meanie Geanies are a female garage punk band. They were formed back in 1997. A bunch of girls who were friends decided to form an all-girl band playing the music they loved, 60s garage punk and beat. They were named after the real cool song “Meanie Genie” (Tony Brook & The Breakers).
The Meanie Geanies music is a mixture of primitive garage punk (Back From the Grave kinda style), raw surf tunes and moody 60s gems and 60s beat grooves. Their sound is clearly 60s - influenced using vintage instruments and equipment still quite fresh as the Geanies is a band that lives and plays in the 21st century and not back then.
THE STORY - CV Back in the 90s they performed in several live shows in their hometown Athens with bands like The Cardinals, The Walking Screams and The Outtasites. They also released a single back in 1998: I'm On My Way / You Left Me Blue (Action Recs), which was a hit in the 60s Greek scene for its mellow tunes and its vintage sound. That single was sold out almost right away!
As the band was formed of young girls, they all took their separate ways for a while and got back together in the Spring of 2001, older and more aware of what they wanted to do and which way to go about it. They wanted to play, play, play, gig all over Greece and have a good time for themselves and for their audience who had missed them all the years of their absence!
That’s what they did and since then they have gigged in any place they liked and with a bunch of other bands, from the most famous in their style to the youngest to help them out!
To give a list, they opened for: The Fuzztones, Electralane, Sky Saxon & The Seeds, The Sound Explosion and “Diaphana Krina”.
They played with some of the coolest bands around: The Frantic V, Yesterday's Thoughts, The Psykicks, The Teardrops and The Teddy Boys From The Crypt.
They gave their own wild allnighter shows in places and events as: Athens Festival (Lycabettus Theatre), Belle Vue Weekender (60s 3day fest), Garage Festival (Gagarin), Vavel Comics Festival, Indie Free Festival, Antiracist Festival and too many nightclubs to mention.
And they managed to get together to tour all over Greece: Thessaloniki, Komotini, Agrinio, Kalamata, Larissa, more than once throughout the past 6 years.
At some point they realised that they should also put out an album, to have something to remember as they are a live – entertaining band and not a recording project, and they got into the studio in the summer of 2005. The material was recorded in a month more or less, but unfortunately remains unmixed and waiting for them to stop their gigging activities and get down to producing it!
In the meantime, as their fans were pressing for something to listen to at home, they recorded live some of their favourite all time garage punk gems, to keep their originals for their album (…). And thus came up with “Cover Ups”, an all DIY – all Meanie Geanie production! They recorded, designed, produced and sold it by themselves.
THE GEANIES TODAY: The band just released their latest 7" single "No More" (b/w Stormy) by Fuzz Overdose records
