On 'Surf, Skiffle & Synaesthesia'
(release date December 2007 / sonoplexus records / sonoplex01)
"Everything gets re-cycled, why not musical sessions?" Dylan Seaton thus convinced Hartley Allen to revisit the salvaged Cabine du Loup tapes recorded July 1992, France. In the sessions loads of mics were funnelled down into stereo. Nothing was compressed on either the acoustic or electric guitar - or "set up conventionally as I (HDA) hadn’t a clue where the sessions were leading me, they were just a way of unburdening a lot of musical baggage in a big stone barn".
So DJS kept it in two track – no dubs, just processing and re-editing with acoustic and electric guitars alongside hiss and breath and clothes and birds and small sounds and seat squeaks and "a dodgy connection on the electric that I (HDA) noticed kept altering the tone in a curious way as I was playing. Before I re-soldered it I turned the Fender amp up full and recorded ‘One Calory Engine’ and ‘Bark’. So, just a Fender amp and occasionally a volume pedal to keep things in check - other than various mechanicals and de-tunings. I needed to kick them around and listen - simple. Never thought about using the session as source material in itself..."
Before HDA entered the Dylophonic Workshop, that is.
