*** OFF TO EGYPT IN MARCH 2010 ***

… is it a 50s cabaret-band that has listened to too much reggae? is it balkans pop? is it jazz?
... whatever! just get up n dance!
Hailing from Salzburg, Austria, the merry poppins are a live band fusing Balkan styles, jazz, hip hop and 1950s cabaret sounds, with a solid base of skankin’ urban roots reggae.
Within the last couple of years, the band has advanced from an insiders’ tip to a hot international stage act. Following numerous shows in all kinds of venues, from skanky jazz clubs to posh castle-resorts, the merry poppins were invited to play at the International Bansko Jazz festival in Bulgaria and the International Saalfelden Jazzfestival in Austria in 2008. After the successful release of their debut-album Mildenburg 11 – a track even made it into Korean TV commercial! – the merry poppins completed their second CD Inspector Malosso in May 2008. .

Stylistically, Inspector Malosso, the second album of the merry poppins, ties in with the debut-CD of the band. However, this time the styles are driven to extremes, from over-produced to minimalistic.

The CD Release Tour has led the merry poppins to the Balkans in May 2009. The inspiring tour, on which the band encountered generous hospitality, was made possible by the friendly support of the Austrian Cultural Forums in Ljubljana, Zagreb and Beograd and of the Salzburg Culture Funds.
With Inspector Malosso, the 5 musicians are also heading South-East in terms of their music – from sweeping Balkan grooves to oriental tunes, such as in the track Opium Desert, to a ramble through Chinese Bars. Once again, the merry poppins are jumping into the pool of music-history and also freely incorporate global phenomena, such as Reggae or Hip Hop into their programme, which solely consists of original compositions. With the beguiling charm of their very independent glocalized style, the young artists groove directly from the Salzach-river to the Danube-Delta – and hopefully even further!
Regarding the content of the lyrics, the CD bears the signature of vocalist David, who assigns the fictitious character of Inspector Malosso with scrutinizing the various, often autobiographically tinted, character-traits of people. A very nit-picka and sometimes a little corrupt person, the inspector encounters a number of potential suspects. He grabs a few drinks in some Chinese Bars and interrogates people such as Bob who continuously bounces back from brick walls, or Mr. Popkin who strolls through life with his childlike smile, happily feeding the ducks in the park. In the end, it turns out that all these characters represent aspects of Inspector Malosso himself. His investigation is an inner journey into the deep corners of his personality, into an Opium Desert, an exotic, foreign world – mysteriously tempting and scary at the same time.
Like a musical chameleon, vocalist David changes the tone of his voice, from stakkato-like raps to gravelly and smokey-voiced ballades. Accordingly, the tunes of the merry poppins make you tap into all kinds of emotions, from melancholy to child-like happiness. And they will for sure make you boogie!
