‘musically rich & beautifully produced...’ - In The Mix
‘the Red Eyes’ fan base flock to hear the Melbourne outfit’s party dub sound.’ - Rolling Stone Australia, April 2007
‘…such is the power of top-shelf dub. True to the spirit and messages of the music’s long history, The Red Eyes are breathing new life into dub in Australia and are doing it with soul and authenticity.’ - In The Mix
Melbourne’s celebrated monster band THE RED-EYES has undergone a diet of sorts in the past year… and that doesn’t only mean this hard working act have been eating Dub/Reggae for breakfast lunch and dinner over the past 7 years.
The now 7-piece dynamo has consolidated upon their once massive entourage in an incarnation that includes a select group of multi-instrumentalist musical talents.
Founded in 2002 as an 11-piece act that described themselves as something of a football team, THE RED-EYES can now travel lightly during their busy schedule of touring and appearances at many of Australia’s major festivals, without detracting from their massive live sound. It also means more diversity, with special guests drawn from a vast array of Melbourne’s finest musicians who’ve worked with the band at one time or another throughout THE RED-EYES' trajectory.
Considered by fans & music critics alike as one of the few authentic Dub/Reggae groups to come out of Australia, THE RED-EYES have been shaking foundations around the country with their heavyweight bass & mind-altering Dub sound. Arming themselves with bass, drums, guitar, keyboards, percussion, trumpet, sax and live dubs, THE RED-EYES are led by fiery singer El Witeri who draws on his Maori heritage for inspiration. THE RED-EYES live show is nothing short of incendiary. The pressure builds with melodic slow-burners and sci-fi dub and erupts with fist-in-the-air militant reggae.
Since their inception in 2002 THE RED-EYES have played killer shows including festivals such as Meredith, Woodford Folk Festival, Pyramid Rock, Bellingen Global Carnival, St.Kilda Festival, Peats Ridge, Great Escape and held numerous national tours. THE RED-EYES have recently performed live onstage with the infamous Mad Professor and supported the likes of The Wailers, Dub Syndicate, Salmonella Dub, Black Seeds, Cornerstone Roots, Concord Dawn, Sola Rosa, Pitch Black & The Resin Dogs to name a few. These shows have received glowing reviews, often claiming that THE RED-EYES explosive live show has eclipsed the main act.
With the help of funding from the JB Seed grant, THE RED-EYES recorded two EPs, ‘HIGH PLACE’ and ‘PROLIFIC/MY KINGDOM’ followed by their debut album ‘RUDE WORLD’. These milestones in Australian music have enjoyed solid airplay in Australia, New Zealand, Asia, the Pacific Islands and Canada having collectively sold over 12,000 copies invading venues, homes and DJ record bags.
‘RUDE WORLD’ has its roots firmly planted in traditional rhythm and melody whilst launching into intergalactic dub effects. Confidently melding their disparate styles and influences, from the soulful opening track “The Power” to the militant politically driven stomper “Arms Over Jordan” (featured on Rolling Stone Magazine’s compilation CD, April ’07). Two years in the making, the album combines masterfully produced beats, honest heartfelt lyrics, with shake the house rhythms that set a benchmark for Australian Dub/Reggae.
Now The Red-Eyes are buried in their home studio laboratory conducting wild experiments in sound and rythym for their upcoming as yet untitled new album. Watch for the guys on tour finally for the 1st single in mid-march. In the meantime watch this space for new tracks being posted soon.
